When i worked at a dealership we saved all the "take offs" from people changing out the exhaust just to have the parts needed in case someone needed those parts. Take offs went for far cheaper then new ones. Those Y pipes are prone to breaking and Harley knew about it and did nothing to prevent it.

Used to be that way. I busted the flange on my old butterfly carb back in 1988, went to the dealer, and they said it'd be another week before they ordered parts and another week before delivery. I asked the parts guy if he had anything used laying around, and he told me to wait a minute. Came out with a brand new take-off, told me to use the cable bracket from my old one, and charged me $100.

My brand new 1984 fxst softail had a kick start. When you used the kickstart it would dent the front muffler. The dealer would replace the muffler and say you’re fixed. I would get on the bike and say, you better order another one. I kicked and dented the muffler again.this went on until the warranty expired. Then they said sorry, you’re out of warranty. So I fixed it myself, I installed a Paughco 2 into 1 with a fishtail. It ran better, looked better and no more dents. Dear Harley engineers, there is more to warranty then parts replacement.

I have TIG welded several of these "Y" pipes. The last one required almost 40 minutes of welding as it was really broken up. After welding I heat it up with a torch and stick it in sand to slow cool and to reduce stresses. The important next step is to attach the exhaust system loosely on the bike and than start tightening from the engine back, again to reduce stresses in the system.

No direct straight on access. My Rinehart true dual rear header is curved in front of the one exhaust stud/nut.
