I used to see Rowland in Fitzroy and finally got to meet him through a friend. Ran into him several times and then he came to my home. I'll always remember the thrill of him sitting on my couch, playing my husband's home made guitar and commenting on how fat my cat Lulu was. He checked out my books and recommended several to me. I still have that list somewhere.

Nice to see both Mick Harvey and the Roland in the same project-le deux hommes gentils-always Rolandesque....and Mick if you were'nt around, no one else would've been!!!!-I think you know what I mean!!!???...you're a super drummer....but no one beats Roland's guitarring...he's a 1 man band, just needs drum and base....it's a rare and underrated quality-humility.!!...both Roland and Mick have these, despite their musical genius!!

I can't get enough of this. Didn't really know of Rowland at the time - I am 46 and should have. Was a Bad Seeds fan, too slow on Birthday uptake, though like many was a big fan of "Shivers". I love Rowlands tremelo work on this, truly stunning. Has been an after the fact influence on me if that makes sense. Priceless, timeless, one of our countrys greatest unsung heroes. I wish I had been more aware and taken the time to see him live.

Ever wandered of These Immortal Souls? Some prefer low key local bandings to internationally raised understandings: keep one's head low and one's spirit high were watchword thereof, some might say. For whatever reason, Crime & The City Solution's 'Her Room of Lights' has always been connected, in my mind at least, with, if not Roland's sound, then at least some spirit of his musicall.

From a Saturday morning music show called Recovery. Bands would play live while probably feeling below par at that time of the day. There is another classic performance by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Spencer was obviously still feeling refreshed from the night before, he went completely apeshit. Well worth tracking down.

Poor bass player playing the same line over and over for 7 minutes! By watching Howard performing live I realized that most of his songs are written in a simple bass line and a minimal beat but they never get boring.. I don't know how he does that! he's one of a kind!

Good observation. There’s a simplicity to the songs(they’re simple but not simplistic) but they’re gripping. The guitar tone is a definite part of it . And the lyrics, of course. And his delivery.

Exactly Mick is the kind of drummer that does everything backwards to his style never giving a classic drum beat, especially in The Birthday Party. Some very good back beats like Fears of Gun, its very intelligent drumming.!

Think it's not so much the amp voicing as the lack of a trem circuit on the Devilles. He's just naked without it.

@hiptonymusic1794

It occurred, in Melbourne Australia, in about 96 or 97, in a TV studio, broadcast live across Australia, between 9am and 12pm on a Saturday morning in front of a small audience. The show was called "Recovery." Many great performances made then. To find them search... Live on Recovery ...and see what shows up.
