Merhaba. I am Ukrainian. Learning Turkish by parallel reading Turkish, English, Russian. In one of the stories about Sherlock Holmes there is a mistranslation, probably. The English sentence Or could the chief have given West the slip in the fog, and West started at once to London to head him off from his own rooms, was translated into Turkish as Yoksa şef, sisin içinde West'e bir not mu verdi de genç adamımız ondan önce Londra'ya yetişmek için hemen yola çıktı? The meaning "to give a slip" is "to run away" (atlatmak) My question is: has the "bir not vermek" the same meaning? Or not? Thank you very much. Merhaba! I am learning Turkish by reading Sherlock Holmes. I read the Turkish translation from English. And if I do not understand completely what is written, I see the English story or the tranlation into Russian (as Ukrainan person, I understand the Russian language excellent). The question is as follows: In the Turkish translation, it is written the following "Evet büyük, sarı Mazarin taşı. Ağımı kurup balığı yakaladım. Ama taşa hâlâ ulaşamadım. Mücevherler ne işe yarar sanki? Onlar olmasa dünya daha yaşanır bir yer olmaz mıydı? Neyse, şimdilik bunları unutalım. Asıl istediğim o taş." But in original it is: 'Yes, the great yellow Mazarin stone. I've cast my net and I have my fish. But I have not got the stone. What is the use of taking them? We can make the world a better place by laying them by the heels. But that is not what I am out for. It's the stone I want.' Please tell me if the translation is wrong or not. The sentence 'What is the use of taking them?' means 'What is the use of taking fish, if I do not have the stone yet?' But, as far as I understood, in the Turkish translation it is "For what good is the jewlery in this world?" Or I am wrong?
@tschewm1353
4 жыл бұрын
And in French it is (my French is wery poor): - Oui, la grosse pierre jaune de Mazarin. J'ai lancé mon filet et j'ai mes poissons. Mais je n'ai pas la pierre. Alors à quoi bon les prendre ? Certes, le monde serait meilleur si nous les mettons hors d'état de nuire. Mais ils ne m'intéressent pas. C'est le diamant que je veux. mes poissons = les (the fish means the criminals that have stolen the stone)

@@tschewm1353 you are right dear. I am not turk but I speak Turkish and live in Turkey for 13 years. I think the meaning is very different in Turkish... It is like: what are the precious stones for? When he said 'people can talk many languages' in Turkish as 'insanlar çok dil konuşabiliyorlar' that 'konuş-abiliyor-lar' is really hard for any foreigner because we add ability at the end of the word.😄 (can;ebilmek/abilmek, lar;from 3rd plural appendix from they) And it has same rules for that, so its hard for many of them.

It is truly inspiring that you can improve yourself so much. ✨ Also, Dilara's tone, diction, and motivating approach are great. Just a little note, we don't usually say 'yarım yıl' in Turkish; we say 'altı ay.' 'izleyeceğim' or 'gideceğim’ we do not read these as written. We pronounce 'izliyceem', 'gidiceem'. Good luck on your Turkish language journey. 💫 Vay canına, neredeyse 1 saat boyunca Türkçe konuştunuz ve sadece 3 ay çalışarak!!! Kendinizi bu kadar geliştirebilmeniz gerçekten ilham verici ✨ Ayrıca Dilara’nın ses tonu, diksiyonu ve motive edici yaklaşımı harika. Sadece ufak bir not Türkçede genelde ‘yarım yıl’ demeyiz, ‘6 ay’ deriz. ‘İzleyeceğim’ veya ‘Gideceğim’ bunları yazıldığı gibi okumayız. ‘İzliyceem’, ‘Gidiceem’ deriz. I am learning turkish for three months, too. My mother tongue is German. But I am still far away from your level, Steve. In my opinion the difficulty for us (English/German mother tongue) is, that you have to construct the sentences from the end to the beginning. The verb form is always the most difficult thing in a sentence. Therefore I use to think about the verb form at first when beginning a sentence. A wrong approach for turkish, because the verb is always the last word in a sentence.

It’s interesting that with an input-heavy method you understand a lot a speak a lot but it doesn’t come easily. I’ve been learning welsh with an output-heavy method (SaySomethinginWelsh)and the language comes much more fluidly. I wonder if LingQ might be improved by having an output-heavy component similar to SSiW?
@Thelinguist
4 жыл бұрын
I know nothing about this program. The language has to come from input. An output-heavy method presumably means coaxing input from a teacher. I have had 15 hours of conversation over the last 3 months, most of my time. has been spent on input. If I stepped up my speaking I would have a better flow. But I would still lack enough vocabulary for most meaningful conversations. I am not so concerned about having an easy flow in a small amount of language content. I prefer to aim for a high level of comprehension which can be activated into strong speaking capability later. I guess it depends on your goals.

Steve Kaufmann - lingosteve please take no offence. You’ve done a brilliant job and your my hero when it comes to language learning philosophy. You’re doing much better after 3 months than I normally do with my languages. And I love LingQ. I’m just happily surprised that after using the output heavy method I was speaking in basic conversations rather fluently after 3 months (which I have never experienced before). It’s no substitute for huge amounts of input but when I started my input phase (after the course was over) I felt like I was swimming rather than wading through treacle. SSiW is the program I used. I think you would hate it - it relies on being taught increasingly complex phrases which you translate into welsh after an English prompt. They then repeat the answer in the language twice so you can self evaluate. It’s self-paced and each lesson lasts for about 30 min. Like you, they don’t teach grammar, you just pick it up naturally (which is good because welsh grammar is horrible). Anyway, in my fantasy world you and the guys from SSiW would band together and create a program that focuses on both. 😀

Ask SaySomethinginWelsh to add more languages instead of expecting Steve to do it. (There are other SaySomethingIn.. languages but they do not have the same program as SSIW.) Glossika changed to an output system last month. Dumb move. Many of his subscribers were upset and several canceled their subscription and demanded a refund. Within a week Glossika had techs working on an input-only option.

I'm not sure what you mean. This is a lesson. The purpose of the lesson is to get me talking. This is not meant to be and even handed conversation. I think the tutor, Dilara,, does an excellent job of keeping me talking and encouraging me.

Your Turkish is a little bad You speak perfect other languages, but you can read good Turkish lines in Turkish, but you speak 8 languages, which must be really hard for you. Türkçeniz biraz kötü Diğer dilleri mükemmel konuşuyorsunuz ama Türkçe'de iyi Türkçe çizgiler okuyabiliyorsunuz ama 8 dil konuşuyorsunuz ki bu sizin için gerçekten zor olmalı.

Hi Steve. I'm a fan of yours, but I'm going to give you some real feedback because everyone here seems to be too busy sucking up to you to tell you anything useful. There are some real problems with your pronunciation. For example, I couldn't understand the way you were saying yağmur at first because of way you pronounced the "u". You also mispronounced haber as "habar", possibly because of your knowledge of Arabic and Persian. Although Turkish has many loan words from these languages, the pronunciations are always changed in the process. The grammar problems are perhaps more significant. I think your insistence on learning words has lead you astray here, as you seem to fumble for the right forms when conjugating verbs. A better knowledge of suffixes would have helped you here. Some information about the past tense in Turkish: it is irregular in the sense that it doesnt use the same personal suffixes as the other tenses. In fact, the past tense suffixes have a more synthetic character, and could be said to combine person and tense information. So, where we might logically expect "yaptısın" we instead have "yaptın", and where we might expect "yaptıyız" we instead find "yaptık", which really has no relation to anything else. You've certainly made a strong start in the language, but there's a way yet to go. I hope you'll take my comments in the amicable spirit in which they're offered.

Thank you and I am well aware of my difficulties. I am , however, a lot better than I was, and if I continue I will only get better. To me language learning is a matter of getting used to the language, getting used to certain things so we can better discover other things. Pointing these out helps to notice things, or at least moves me in that direction. So thanks.

I just want to add some additional comments. Telling me that I am doing well actually is more useful than correcting my mistakes. I will eventually use the language more correctly. I have looked at verb tables many times and these are very difficult to remember. I am quite aware that I will continue to get them wrong for quite a long time. However the feeling that I was able to have a conversation for close to an hour on a variety of subjects, even with mistakes and then to get encouraging comments from people Helps keep me, and other students like me, going. I don't believe you can nail down the basics, the correct usage until you have had a lot of exposure to the language. Of course it's possible, with a teacher, to drill in the usage so that with a much more limited vocabulary and on a limited range of subjects you can produce the language more correctly. In the long run I don't think that is as useful as expanding one's comprehension and vocabulary. Different approaches to language learning I guess.
