@@praetorianstride5948 Having spent decades wearing armour, I have learnt the hard way that you're absolutely right. What I've also learnt is that your opponent's offensive capability is cheaper to upgrade than upgrading defensive capability. I agree, a well trained soldier is much harder to hit, armour or no armour. One thing I've also noticed is that armour can also give a false feeling of invulnerability. That is, until someone shoves a cheap knife through an eyeslot or less armoured armpit.

Allright heres an idea for you. Light infantry in ancient times often doubled up on the shield side of themselves, or even caried multiple shields for additional protection, so heres my idea. Asymmetrical armor, easily carried or deployed, that when im a shooting stance, provides a very difficult to hit profile. That is to say, forward arm head left leg , left and front of torso, along with a collapsible shield on the rifle, made in such a way that when in stance and facing an enemy, incoming projectiles are deflected or absorbed by the the armor most likely to be struck by them, and when crouched provides cover even in the open, making formation fighting useful in terms of mobile human cover.
@professor_paradox7879
3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea but it might not work in practice as what if the enemy flank behind the soldiers deploying the asymmetrical armour. Not to mention if a grenade is lobbed over yhe shield wall or person and they don’t notice they’ll break formation. I believe it’s a good idea in theory. But I suggest maybe more of a buckler type shield that can offer suitable protection but remains light enough for soldiers to use easily. But then again both of our shield ideas hold merit and are applicable in different situations as you so described. It would be interesting to see shields in modern combat and how they would affect the battle.

They could always, say, have a plan for what you do if the batteries run out instead of just dumping the project. Like, say, determine which of the voluminous amounts of kit can just be left with the suit if you need to ditch it. Sort of like we already do, maybe seperate excess gear into panniers that stay with the rig if you have to disembark. A lot of the issue is just the constant treating of every piece of kit as some sort of absolutely vital thing a soldier must carry at all times just in case. Or, hey, use this super suit for specialized functions like raids or urban combat where the trade off in mobility and operational time is worth the protection increase. Maybe adjust some fucking tactics instead of treating it like a magic performance enhancer that has to work everywhere all the time or not at all.

I prefer the concept of a soft exoskeleton for infantry. Using the concept of artificial muscles using twisted carbon or plastics. It can be activated with heat or electricity. And while I haven’t seen anyone specifically do this yet, I am convinced it would work and it’s been my dream to one day try it. If a suit was woven similarly to how the human muscular system works, or even more advanced weave patterns developed by ai, then it could basically take the place of a hard exoskeleton and by utilized in a basic combat uniform. At first only for special ops or specific roles. But eventually as technologies increase it would be a everyone thing. It wouldn’t necessarily make someone 10x stronger, but it would allow them to expend much less energy to haul around their armor and gear. March for longer. Hold a position for longer. Especially since modern armor for military has completely changed from lightweight to “just make sure it works”. Its considerably heavier than decades prior. Which is crazy because the materials have become much more advanced. Boron ceramics specially designed (though probably for cost effectiveness more than anything). Special composite backers. Everything better than ever before. But heavier. Meanwhile for over a decade we’ve had literal flexible level III armor that feels and looks like rubber. Nanotech stuff that seems like science fiction. But no one uses it because the billionaires on the boards of those arms companies have to make their money. Lol

Every few years some fancy new weapon or fancy new armour or fancy new uniform or some combination of the above comes out that's supposed to show us what the soldier of the future, the soldier of the 21st century will look like. And huge amounts of taxpayer money certainly goes into this stuff, but it never seems to ultimately lead to a soldier actually wearing or carrying any of it into battle though, instead when the sound of actual real battle calls it always, without fail seems to ultimately go back to sending in a dude in camo gear and a helmet with an M4, or some pretty small variation thereupon. On a note concerning layered soft armor. There have been incidental tests that have given evidence that dual armor panels separated by other material could be effective against standard FMJ rifle rounds. The speculation is that the first panel disrupts the projectile and reduces its velocity enough to be within the protection rating of the second panel. This has been done with dual LVL 3A panels, separated by other fabrics or non-ballistic rated materials. It's anecdotal because it could be the flexibility of the panels increasing their give allowing the panels to absorb more energy. If they were pressed against a human torso, maybe not.

In my opinion, advanced small hydraulic systems applied to the exoskeleton to support excess weight is really with fluid cables to redistribute fluids when needed like combat mode. As for power system to manage this digitally, graphene batteries is the way to go baby, because they are so damn light and yields more energy than lithium ion batteries. That way we can build a full body ballistic armor suit (steel or ceramic). You never know for sure until you actually tried in this realm of possibilities.

There is another kind of protection for future, similar to reptiles like cameleons, the armor would change color to blend with the surroundings, and will give shielding to infrared emissions which also depends on battery power at this time.
