In January 2022, Dr. Jack Shonkoff released a call to action emphasizing the need to build upon the core framework of early childhood development. The core concepts we’ve followed for years include:
1. the impact of early experiences on brain architecture;
2. the importance of serve and return interactions for healthy development; and
3. the disruptive effects of toxic stress on the developing brain and early learning.
These concepts are still vital, but advances in biological sciences call for us to expand the frame and add three additional core concepts:
4. connecting the brain to the rest of the body;
5. supporting universal needs and individual variation; and
6. providing young children what they need when they need it most.
