Many of us find ourselves frustrated or disappointed when we don't meet our intentions. Worse, we may affirm self-sabotaging beliefs that hold us back if not drag us further down.
This often stems from a subconscious level of expectation, regardless of our logical brain agreeing with the sentiment.
The first question I was asked, and now ask my clients when they feel upset about not getting what they want in life and are confident it's not an expectation, is:
Why are you upset then?
For what purpose do frustration, disappointment, or resentment arise?
It doesn't feel good to admit that we may have set an expectation without realizing it. That can seem selfish and lead to shame or guilt. But acknowledging and accepting this is crucial to learning from our unmet desires.
This approach led me to the high levels of success I experienced in my BMX career and now as a performance coach and speaker. I don't just speak theory; I walk my talk and work on myself daily. I have people in my life who hold me accountable, push me past my comfort zone, and inspire me to grow and develop in all areas of my life.
Mastering one's time, mind, and body starts with accepting reality. "This is where I am," and maybe that place is hard to admit. Scratch that, it always sucks to admit our flaws-it never feels good.
But awareness allows us to generate the motivation to do something about it. It empowers us to change our circumstances, especially when we connect why we must make a change to what we value in our lives.
This creates the intrinsic drive to show up, regardless of how we feel. This is how high-performing people achieve a level of mastery over their time, mind, and body.
It's not an outcome. It's a process.
It's a commitment to the sport of trying.
It's all verbs.
It's all a commitment to the process of growth.
