Nice! I'm a big fan of the "cheap" all purpose stuff. At my local co-op they have bags of 10-10-10, 16-16-16, 12-12-12, and 6-12-12 for less than $8. While you can't really dial in your nutrients based on a soil test, it's a super cheap option that gives nice results. You just need to be careful and pay attention to the source of them. I bought a bag of it from a big box store and it had a lot of corn in it. Not the end of the world, but just something to pay attention to.

George a lot of people I’ve met who say they are from Chicago are from a suburb of Chicago. I was born near North Ave and Wells back in the early 50’s. The only grass I knew was in Lincoln Park. Now I live in Houston. My lawn is a version of Bermuda called Celebration. My friends and neighbors tell me how green and lush my grass feels. I on the other hand am pulling weeds by hand , watering brown spot with the hose and having nightmares about burning my grass using the wrong chemicals. Help me Obiwan.😊 I miss my condo in LA.

Thanks for the videos, I am learning a bunch from you crazy golf course lawn guys. I started a major project on my lawn based on these videos and I am not sure if I am turning to the green side. I see you mention Chicago burbs a bit . . . I live in northern suburbs (Mundelein area) if you ever have a hankering to check out my project and give some additional pointers. Anyway my project is what I think would be a top dressing. I have been bouncing around on my zero turn for too many years now so I made a drag rake out of a big piece of c-channel. So scalping and laying out sand/soil mix and dragging it out. The drag rake worked out much better than I thought, but revealed the fact I am going to need a few semi's of material. Keep the videos coming . . I am a subscriber.

Dude you have a good way of explaining things and you can really reel in someone into understanding these little details that are so important in these lawn obsession of ours. Good job and now I know the difference between the Scotts yellow bag and the light blue bag I know now to use the yellow bag early spring next year But question: when I oversees in the early fall, what fertilizer is to be used at that time? I mean can it be the light blue one too cuz I know the yellow one won’t help the seed germinate, or should I stick to Milorganite? Btw, this year I overseeded in this spring and threw down some Pennington UltraGreen starter fertilizer and has been doing very well with a deep green look.

Lesco has a 50 lb spreader too. Almost overkill for my lawn as well, but the difference between a Lesco and a store bought spreader is night and day, especially for a bumpy lawn. Those cheap, lightweight big box store spreaders make me nervous as they get jostled around too easily from bumps. I must have used too much milo over the years because my soil test again shows high phosphorus levels. Though I did just see it for 7.99 at the local fleetfarm here in WI. Looking forward to seeing how the flagship works for you.

Ok George.. I accidentally went a little fertilizer crazy.. Ive been looking for videos about too much fert 😬😬😬 I may have slightly over applied but we got a good rain after like half inch and more rain tomrw. Do you know when I would start seeing if I messed up bad or not?! I used Scott's Lawn Food 32 nitrogen yikes.. and I put down roughly 12,500 on 10,000 sq feet.. maybe like 5 lbs extra 😬 I cringed a little when you said go light on your spring application. I think I went too heavy and hope I didn't jack up my lawn 🤦🏼♀️ only time will tell..
@PrincessCutLawnCare

Haha you’ll be alright I believe bag rate for the Scott’s lawn food is about .75 lbs of N per 1k ft so you applied about a pound of N per thousand, you will be A OK 👍 BUT be prepared for a boat load of mowing because that pound of N combined w the spring flush of growth is gonna make your lawn grow so fast you will need to mow every 2 days haha

@@PrincessCutLawnCare You are the best..that makes me feel better! I keep looking outside like oh crap after I measured what I did lol.. I was in a hurry to get it down before the rain and should have measured instead of eyeballing it.😩 but I love mowing so im cool with that! I just want that green up!

I wouldn't really consider Scott's fertilizers to be the "cheap" fertilizers (as shown in you video's title), but more middle of the road. How about the other less costly stuff at HD, W@lmart or M&nards ? Stuff like Vigoro, Sta -Green, Forever Green, Simplify or M&nards brand stuff? Those are the cheap brands. Are they worthless or what since they are less than half the cost of boutique brands? If you are not a professional and not trying to attain a "golf course" lawn are these good enough? I think it's more important to aerate regularly and overseed for a few seasons to develop a good thick lawn (using a good cultivar to begin with) that keeps most weeds out naturally. So what do you say about those cheaper brands?

I couldn't find milorganite so I used Scotts Green Max. I put it down a month ago and my yard is still dark green. I was lucky I had a full day of rain afterwards.

What can I put down with Milo to quicken the greening of my grass and when to put it down? I put Milo down 1x a week for two weeks ( I saw a youtube video of someone testing putting Milo down 1x a week, 1x every 2 weeks 1x a month etc 🤷🏽♀️) I was following the milo schedule and my grass was like turf so pretty and green after winter and beginning of Spring, now it's not as dark green as it was all over and I have some brown spots, slowly getting green. I have never gotten my soil tested. BTW I'm originally from Illinois but now in WA state

Hey neighbor! assuming its not too hot by you, i would put down a fast source of nitrogen such as scotts lawn food in the green bag. Milo is slow release so you wont get a fast green up say compared to the other synthetic fertilizers. Milo is great and has an awesome color responce but try not to over do it because of its phos levels. check out this video i made where i apply a some fast N and iron for a quick green up: kzitem.info/news/bejne/s4hn4ISsomicaG0

Can I use Scotts Turf Builder (Light Blue Bag) to kill dandelions and plant new seed? I was planning to use weed and feed, wait two weeks until I overseed.
@PrincessCutLawnCare

The second bag to the left (light blue bag) can and should be used during seeding, it will feed your new grass and kill/prevent weeds at the same time. See my video where I apply it during seeding m.kzitem.info/news/bejne/x52X32SEsIWGm44
