Baan Akard Yen is a two-story residential project located on Yen Akard street in Bangkok, Thailand. Named by the owner to evoke the sense of "cool air," the house spans approximately 1,600 square meters and underwent two design phases. Initially set on a 400-square-meter plot, the first design focused on visual interaction between spaces, using framed views to help residents know each other's locations within the house. However, the acquisition of an adjacent plot required a redesign, maintaining the visual connectivity while integrating exterior and interior spaces.
The expanded land allowed for a simplified spatial organization with five distinct courtyards offering varied landscapes, making the house feel light and comfortable. Seven cast concrete walls form the main visual structure, dividing the house into different zones while linking them through specific openings. The courtyards serve as visual connectors, enabling residents to see various parts of the house and stay connected.
A standout feature is the central "terminal" hall, characterized by four fourteen-meter-tall cast concrete walls and ceiling, creating a striking centerpiece. Skylights at each end of the curved concrete ceilings bring in natural light, enhancing the space with a dynamic interplay of shadows and light throughout the day.
