Asheville, North Carolina is a picturesque mountain town that celebrates the makers, the music and the people who have been drawn here to pursue their passion. Today, we'll explore a few local spots showing off how funky Ashvillian's can be.
Our first stop is the Asheville Pinball Museum where you can relive one of the best of your childhood. Owner T.C DeBellow has 50 historically significant pinball machines on display and for play. And he didn't stop there, there are two rooms full of vintage video game fun. Nearly everywhere you look, there's pop culture collectibles of all shapes and sizes.
Asheville's also known for its music scene and our next stop is a place where you can experience that first hand. Skinny Beats Drum Shop is the place to go for lessons with renowned percussionist Billy Zanski. The first instrument we'll be learning about is the Djembe, which is from West Africa. You can make music by simply hitting it with your hands. There's one more funky experience Billy offers here, Sound Healing. Here you'll lay back while he plays surreal noises as you soak it in and heal your body.
With your newly learned beat skills, you can head on over to Pritchard Park. Every Friday night, spring through fall a crowd gathers for an improvisational drum session where anyone can join in and everyone is free to dance to whatever beat is playing.
If you've ever rocked out to an 80's song or been terrified by a 60's sci-fi thriller, it turns out that the music may have been made on a Moog Synthesizer or their signature instrument, the Theremin and it was made right here in downtown Asheville.
Take a behind-the-scenes tour at the Moog Factory and see for yourself the attention and care that goes into making one of their instruments. Afterwards, you can literally try your hand at playing the Theremin or any instruments in their showroom.
Located just a few miles up the road in Weaverville is our next stop. The Junebug Retro Resort offers a funkier way to spend the night. They have 10 vintage and vintage-inspired trailers on a picturesque 50 acres.
From vintage games to vintage trailers and music in between, Asheville brings the fun and the funk!
