I always felt like the plot of 3 was more “show, don’t tell.” Dr. M says the Coopers don’t care about their partners, but when you look over the game and everything you know about Sly, you see a million instances where he proves he’s not like that. The main plot, while not involving M directly, is really about Sly’s bond with his friends strengthening - through absence or trial or romantic entanglement 😆 - so when we reach the ending, he doesn’t hesitate to have their symbols on the new vault or even sacrifice his legacy to save them. The real treasure is the friends he’s made along the way, you could say 😉😉

@@melrakan I agree to a point, though I believe that was a theme of Sly 3. One reason his family was wiped out was because they flew too close to the sun; they had great hubris. When Sly was telling Bentley that he wanted him and Murray to enter the vault with him, Bentley’s responses made it pretty clear that Sly’s conversation with Dr. M had struck a chord with him. His responses to Sly were very restrained, almost passive-aggressive. Sly is fundamentally somewhat arrogant. In the first game it was something of an act since he was still a rookier, but in Sly 2 he’s very self-assured and the game makes a point of exploiting that. He’s more mature in Sly 3, but it is still called the Cooper Gang, and the whole point of the job is to get Sly to a treasure that the others aren’t even allowed to see. Dr. M’s conversation with Sly shows a perspective that Bentley hasn’t ever really considered before, and that makes sense considering that they grew up together as the best of friends- a friendship which is ultimately reaffirmed. But without that friendship, Bentley may not have been swayed- showing firsthand how people like Dr. M and Clockwerk come to be in the first place.

I think you have to view Dr. M differently. Yes he's a possibility of Bentley. But less what Bentley COULD become, and more what Bentley HASN'T become. Dr. M and the Cooper vault in general make sly do some inner contemplation about his legacy and team. He realizes that his family isn't perfect. Yes they were master thieves, but not always the best people. He cements how he's different in their fight, and even at the end of the game finally releases them from all the help he's gotten to go pursue the lives they want.

After letting Sly 4 sink in for a bit, it really doesn't make me want a Sly 5 from Sanzaru. They horribly misconstrued what make the characters so memorable and ultimately bastardized all of them...and the lame time travel narrative was horrendously contrived and boring. While their weakness is in the narrative, their strengths lie in the gameplay (Minus the use of QTEs in boss fights), though I can't say the level designs were all that great and I find it hard to navigate when everything blends in. Sly 2 had some great landmarks for you to know where you are. Even with a mini-map, I still ended up lost in Sly 4. Sly 4 in a nutshell is basically a fanfiction...and a terrible one at that.

In defence for Sly 3 here. While we can agree that Carmelita's voice was weird, I actually found her character still pretty accurate with the series. I mean, Sly did disrupt a meeting with her officers regarding Octavio whom was polluting Venice after all. As for her dialogue, I'm sure we can chalk that all-up to the fact that we can all lash-out and say things we don't mean when we're ticked off. Whereas for the final chapter, the circumstances that were present made her actions all the more justified. Sly was literally about to be killed. As for Murray, I don't have much of a problem with him. In Sly 2, his voice always weirded me out because it sounded like he had a sore throat and he was trying to fake a "tough-guy" voice at the same time. Which made all of his lines, while not bad, weird for my taste. As for Sly 3 onward, I always enjoyed Murray's enthusiastic tone because it works for the point the series takes place in imo. During the Venice sequence he's still very calm, but after he returns to his original rousts he seems so joyful and pumped to enter these situations. Which makes it pretty nice for me, sorta like Po from Kung Fu Panda. Murray usually speaks at appropriate tones throughout the game from what I can remember, and a number of his lines still hit hard for me (not including the final chapter with some extremely emotional lines), like his determination to retrieve the team van, or the way he yells in shock when the beast takes away the Guru, etc. So I'd honestly say he's a leg-up from Sly 2's Murray. Especially when you realise that after the first chapter in Sly 3 Murray discovered he meant way more to the team than the muscle. As for Bentley's character "change", it actually works for me. Dr. M didn't suffer any real betrayal from Sly's father, but he always felt like he was being taken for grant-age by Sly's father despite the fact he really wasn't. He was just delusional given his intelligence. Bentley suffers the same thing, but his influence with Murray and the stronger connection that they've grown throughout the games in oppose to the classic Cooper gang is way stronger. Bentley proved to be smarter overall. While there's no exact build-up, I'm actually kinda glad that it was solved early and quickly. Dr. M's whole past is about being bent by his old colleagues, which happened at the last second and ended up sparking the third game. If Murray wasn't there, heck if Bentley didn't grow a strong bond with him and Sly, than we can only imagine what he would've done afterwards. So, fortunately, his suspicion was turned down immediately. It's hard to explain, but think of it like you're in a car ride with your parents and you question your capabilities and question if you're an overall good person. But its turned-down immediately by facts and the innocence/influence you and your parents play to each other's lives. That's how I think of it at least. As for Dr. M, he was give enough screen-time. It wouldn't make sense for him to appear anywhere else than the prologue and final chapter.

When I played Sly 3, I got the impression that Sly's dad treated his gang more like employees than friends. And that he may have very well been a big enough jerk to justify Doctor M's massive vendetta against him. And that the reason Bentley didn't end up like Doctor M was because Sly didn't repeat his father's mistake of taking his team mates for granted (plus, it helped that Bentley didn't lose his love interest to Sly LOL).

Let's be honest, if the DLC came out it would have been that he got sent to the future and so they would've gone through a shitty terminator plot line. If there was ever a continuation I'd want to see sucker punch take the helm again, and if they can't then perhaps another company who's record would be good for Sly. Also, just make 4 non canon, trying to continue that would just gimp the game from the start.

4 was lackluster but I didn't see any problems big enough to strike it from the canon. Honestly if they stopped with two the story would be perfect, all the loose ends were tied. I love 3 but it had some story issues too. Also the story still be saved while keeping 4 Canon, it could center around Clockwerk's backstory, no one develops that much hate from just jealousy, Slytankhamun probably did something to him, they may have even been friends. If Bentley has the Theivious Raccoonus Sly can write something in it for them to find him, the story's not in any worse position than it was at the end of 3.

With Murray, I think it was stated that his deeper voiced self from 2 was just an act to like make him sound stronger to be able to help the gang and try to build up false confidence, and its stated that after Bentley got crippled, he tried to keep it up but eventually ended up leaving the gang cause the guilt was too much for him to take since he believed himself was the one to blame, and he mentored under the Guru in hopes that there could be a peaceful solution to problems. Don Octavio kicking Bentley out of his wheelchair and threatening to outright kill him ended up teaching that not everything in life, unfortunately, can be solved peacefully, and with the first and second episodes of the game (not counting the prologue) he gains confidence, this time not being false confidence like in 2, but genuine confidence in himself, and no longer feeling he was the one responsible for Bentley being crippled in 3. Thus, his voice stays the same way like it was in 1, but its because he doesn't need to put on a facade anymore like he did with his deeper voice in 2. I feel this doesn't negate how he is in 2 though since it shows he really does want to help his friends, but was just unable to get the courage to do so until he sort of "forced" it. The ending of Sly 2 really was just the breaking point for the poor guy where he couldn't keep it up any longer. In my opinion, Sly 3 enhanced Murray's character, not regressed it.
@TwilitBeholder
Жыл бұрын
This. A lot of Murray's lines in Sly 2 come off as pretending to be a hero. Even against villians like Rajan and Jean Bison, he tried to act heroic and calls himself "the Murray" in third person like he's on a superhero tv show. Its a bravado to make himself seem more than just the "big dumb muscle" of the team. Murray just really wanted to prove he was useful in the field to his friends instead of just being the no-brain driver. But bravado and acting can't cover up genuine grief/sadness, such as the moment Bentley was injured and Murray blamed himself for not living up to his big bold persona he built up. What good was all that heroic speech if it couldn't make him the hero his friend needed when he needed it the most? That's why Sly 3 feels more like a return to Sly 1's Murray. He was always the same strong loyal loveable oaf deep down, but his confidence comes from a more genuine place rather than feeling he has to prove himself or put on an act. So he sounds like his old goofy self but with the boldness and experience he gained from Sly 2.

37:25 You could make the argument that due to the tech being left in each era, Clockwerk would use that same tech to make himself into a machine. From a different perspective, Clockwerk making himself into a machine would've been impossible without some kind of modern tech, so a time travel plot is kinda necessary? I mean, how could something like the Hate Chip exist in a medieval setting anyway, unless the components for it were left behind through time . . .

I always found the discussion around Sly 4 strange. Like, I enjoyed the trilogy a good deal and I played them as an adult not that long ago so it's not like I had any nostalgia holding me back, but I actually somewhat liked Sly 4. It's not without it's problems of course, not like the trilogy was perfect either, but I do agree that it had more than those did. The gameplay itself was pretty fun, in some ways I thought it was better than 2 or 3 even if by a little. Only really hindered by the loading times and poor framerate which granted are pretty big problems. I have pretty much the same issues with the story as this guy did. I didn't hate the story, I just thought that it was ok with Sly's forced relapse into thievery very out of character, among other problems. Overall it's not a perfect game by a long shot, but I can still call it "good" if you can handle the technically side of things. I prefer the trilogy for the most part, but I never did care for the story too much in any game, just the characters which they really hurt in Sly 3. I saw potential with the story in these games, but it always fell a bit short for me. That said, I really liked the Crash and Spyro remakes a lot, especially CTR Nitro Fueled which was fantastic. So I'd be perfectly fine with good quality remakes of the Sly games by people who know what they're doing. It's unlikely that the best case scenario would occur, but I hope it happens. And I also do like seeing games as they were originally released, but remakes don't hurt that. The originals always exist and there's nothing saying that you can't go back or even like both for different experiences. That's what I did with Spyro. I played the originals for the first time months before the remake and loved them and all their jank, but still greatly loved the remake itself. To put it simply; I like all 4 Sly games, with 4 being confusing for me because as many problems as it has, it's not a bad game. So it's hard to know where to rank it. I do love remakes, because it's just another experience to the same game that I love. I'd prefer a sequel, but sometimes you need to drum up interest like what happened with Crash 4 which is probably the best Crash game to date. That and I like to have my cake and eat it too; give me a remake and a sequel someday pretty please. Very good video as well, I can't get enough of this type of thing.

I enjoyed playing as Riochi and Tennessee Kid but it all fell apart shortly after that. The game made absolutely no positive impact on the series. Honor Among Thieves is a perfect conclusion and it would make no difference to the series if Thieves in Time never happened.

For a first-timer, this was a really nice analysis of the series! You even got what most fans, (myself included) hated about Sly 4. To add on to the stuff you brought up, there were other issues, such as the game's artificial difficulty of making nearly every hazard in the game a *one-hit kill* (makes you forget you have a health bar sometimes lol). Other than Penelope, other characters have also regressed immensely in Sly 4 like Murray being the fat joke and comic relief the entire game (the geisha mission and implied sex with El Jefe should be the... best examples of that); and the fact that in the Arabian level, the *best* idea Bentley could come up with to get through a safe door without alerting the guards in front of it is to have Carmelita scantily-clad and do a sexy belly dance to distract the guards while the gang-- being just a *few feet away* from where the guards are-- sloppily, brute force the door open. Even crazier that Carmelita, despite her prideful & refined personality of the last 3 games, was easily convinced to go along with said plan... There are some nit-picky things I found off such as Sanzaru's no attention to detail. Like how whenever their 2D cutscenes flash back to moments of the previous games, they portray characters like Sly in their new, Sly 4 design instead of their contemporary ones (i.e. Sly is shown wearing a backpack and leg pouch in flashbacks, when he actually wore either one *or* the other in the previous games). But this comment's getting long enough. To answer your concern at 8:57, even having all of Bentley's upgrades in Sly 2 wouldn't have helped you there. That's including his jetpack too-- you move very slowly while using it, especially when moving horizontally. That is also an even bigger issue in Sly 4: Each world's level designs are developed so much with Sly's moveset in mind that playing as other characters becomes tedious when getting around. Not even Carmelita's mega jump can help you scale these levels because the massive jump height from Sly 3 was *nerfed* in this game. Some final points about a few glitches you might not have noticed in the HD Collection: - In Sly 1 HD, after killing any flashlight guard or normal guard, a bass strum starts to play while Sly moves around (like at 1:52). That is *not* supposed to happen. The bass strumming is only supposed to happen when you're behind a flashlight guard, sidling on a wall over a ledge, or crawling behind short platforms (like the stairs surrounding the Panda King in his boss battle) - In Sly 3 HD, when fighting Muggshot as Carmelita, there's supposed to be boss music playing... but for some reason it doesn't. All in all, I was surprised Sony was convinced enough to give this company a chance to make Sly 4 despite them releasing a playable, but messy HD collection, and their dev portfolio being made up of 3 games up to that point-- two of which were poorly received, and one being a poorly-made PS2 port of a PSP game... But I hope you do more "first-time playing" videos like this one. I really enjoyed it!

I am sorry but you complaining about Murray's character feels forced seeing how I played the game and Murray despite having more food jokes still felt in character and definitely not " just the Fat Guy" like most people say. The bass strumming was intentional. Look it up, As for the mugshot boss fight, a lot of music was remixed or removed due to licensing issues
@MProductionsGAMING
3 жыл бұрын
@@selfloathingweekly I know that. Read my comment again. I said the bass strumming is *only* supposed to happen when you're sneaking behind a flashlight guard or holding the circle button to stick to a wall and sidle over a ledge. In the HD remastered version, there's a glitch where if you kill a flashlight guard, the bass strumming will constantly play whenever you move around, and it'll stay that way until you kill another guard or enter a loading screen. Go play or watch gameplay of the PS2 version, you'll see that the glitch doesn't ever happen compared to the timestamp I posted in my OP. Also, no music was remixed, only remastered. The only music not present in the entire HD trilogy was the Mugshot Boss fight music in Sly 3. So it makes no sense that every other song was fine to be in the HD trilogy except for that one song if it was licensing issues. Not even Sanzaru answered when people asked about the missing song years ago, and we all just chalked it up to just another glitch they didn't fix. So how do you know that's the reason why the song isn't there?

For me Sly and Jak are the best platform games ever. The first Sly game for me is close to perfect for its simple gameplay, the moody comic-like atmosphere and the amazing soundtrack. Sly 2 was my favorite growing up because the world was more interactive. My main complain with your analysis is that you have to respect the fact that these games came out during the Ps2 era. Complaining about the fact that you have to go back to the safe house to change a character or how you have to wait for a platform to move to your way for climbing it is absurd. Every damn platform/adventure game on Ps2 had the same level design flaws or limitations. So you have to understand and criticise something for the impact that had during its time. For example you cant criticise a movie from the 80s and compare it with the current state of developing a film. I hope that I've made my point clear, great analysis and video quality

Im sorry but, I hate Carmalita in the 4th game. Her voice is just so annoying! And her design is terrible. I like the old Carmalita. I also think they screwed the pooch on Penelope turning evil. Like, her and Bently where the cutest couple!

Instead of this, I had a game called The Sting. The Sting is one of those "never existed" games, because it's so underrated it never gets covered even by "Top [number]" lists of underrated games, articles. Mostly because it's a low budget German-Russian PC game from the early 2000s. the game's genre is cartoony caricature crime heist action simulator type of game, Gameplay, works as you plan/record yourself going into a number of facilities to rob them, Only after you done, you can play the execution of your heist/plan by playing the recording. If you fucked up, the execution gets interrupted and you fail, either you got seen or heard or you broke the lock and the guard noticed that, the game won't tell you while planning, you just have to know yourself. sometimes you can't carry everything and you need more people that has better skills than you but that means the risk of being found is greater and the loot gets shared among you all. you need money to get better gear and a better car.

I love this series so much and it is sad to see that Sony doesn't want to make more. They did this with the Jak and Daxter series too, so the best thing you can do is buy the remastered series show sony with your dollars.

@@danieldragotti2608 They don't really need to do that. TiT is a mess, sure. But not unsalvagable. They can just write around certain things.

@@WarpChaos You're forgetting there's possibility of making it even worse, TiT has so many inconsistencies it's ridiculous, some being impossible to salvage or make sense of. Go watch J's reviews/TGXs video on it so you can get the full understanding of how bad it really is.

@@TerrorOfTalos I've seen it, and I disagree. Not to mention, I am not a fan of rebooting, or ignoring sequels in general. I would once again argue that there is nothing that can't be fixed by writing around. Sure there is the possibility of making it worse, but that would be possible no matter what route they took. Say they did ignore TiT, and made a direct sequel to Sly 3. There is every chance that game can suck just as much as you say a sequel to TiT would. Bottom line is, we need a proper Sly 5 with a talented developer. Not that Sanzaru were particularly untalented, they just didn't have much of a track record. But if we can get a good team behind a Sly 5, there is no reason to not continue where TiT left off. I know a lot of fans, like myself, would like to see that cliffhanger resolved.

glad I’m not the only one who dislikes Carmelita’s voice in 3. So many of her lines just sounded...off to me. Like when sneaking into her office in Venice when she’s like “the power’s on the fritz again, it’ll calm down in a few minutes” that line stuck out as sounding really awkward to me. Like the emphasis was all on the wrong words. It kinda reminded me of how Tommy Wiseau speaks, in a way, except not nearly as bad. I actually prefer Murray’s voice in 3 and 1 over 2 though. In 2 his voice sounded so weirdly low, and it sounded at times like the actor’s pitch was artificially lowered in post.

Shut the fuck up. Sly 4 is overhated as fuck. It's a good game in its core, but the story is the main issue to me. But story has shit to do with gameplay so don't cry over a fucking raccoon.
