I bought the lapping film and it works perfectly on the backside of the plates. No need to purchase all 7 $25 dollar plates. Maybe just buy 2, since there are 5 plates with holes and 7 lapping films. Be sure to clean off diamond debris before lapping and you're golden.

I can't thank you enough for making this video. I've had the Worksharp PPA for about six months now. And i absolutely love this thing. It's a fantastic, easy to use and highly effective knife sharpening system that includes everything you need. What I never expected was just how in to sharpening I've become. I've watched so many videos on how to properly use it as well as sharpening tutorials in general. You're right, the base Worksharp system gets a blade very very sharp. But your video rocked my world. I'm always looking to improve results, and I had no idea about lapping film until watching this. Since then I've researched it more, and I also ordered the sheets and 7 ceramic honing panels to make an identical kit to yours. The panels were on sale during a tax free weekend so that was the easiest option for me that didn't involve sharing the panels I already have. Thanks again for such an eye opening and educational video, this was a total game changer.

DUUUUUDE!!! You're awesome! You provided not just food for thought, but entire buffet my man. So I've been collecting knives for around 5 years and have taken up sharpening, reluctantly at first a couple years ago, I suck free-hand, so I bought the OG PA when it came out and it's pretty much all I use until, my first run Pro PA came in about a week ago, when I came across your video. A thousand thank you's bro. My film arrived today, I bought the steel 1/8" thick by 1 inch wide, a 48" piece at tractor supply for under 11 dollars. Got some cutting discs for my Dremel tool and I'll be attempting to cut 7 strips of the steel for use with the lapping film. This seems next level brother, maybe some I'm new I'm not hung up on leather and paste. I'm gonna give this an honest go, given the fixed angle of the Pro, I'm excited for reproducible results. Thanks again, I'll be watching your videos regularly.

I suppose it depends on how you finish your edges. I skip the workshop strop and use one from knives plus. I took two sets of knives, and one set constantly gives me BESS of 110 to 115. The other 145 to 150. 2 identical fillet knives and 2 identical pocket knives. Using these, I only went down by 2 grams....nice and shiny but not that much sharper. If I want a super shine, I put a thin layer of flex polish on a strop, let it dry, and then strop. Really nice shine, but there no decrease in BESS value.

Great video. I've already ordered the lapping films. I'm amazed at how much faster the Pro PA is working for me than the last model. Not being able to machine my own steel plates (nor wanting to spend $25 / Worksharp ceramic plate), I'm trying to figure out my options. Using the Worksharp 800 and ceramic plates, is it really necessary to start at 30 microns rather than 12?

Not sure if I am making this to simplistic but why not use the back side of the diamond plates for your film. You can buy 2 for $34.00 and add your film and when you need them you can still peel off the film and use the abrasive side. The magnet works on both sides.
@Sweetknives

Is a good idea but by doing that you would have a different angle because of the added steel on the other side from the other stones so you would have to adjust that, I like the idea though. Another thing is contamination of diamond dust etc from the other side...

But polishing super steels like high-speed tool steels wouldn't make sense, right? These films are aluminum oxide, and you need diamond paste to polish properly because using Al.Ox. can cause carbude fallout, so i hear! i would love to be fully informed on this topic by someone so i can understand better and whether that's even true or not.

It semi works for shine but only reduces BESS results by a few grams. I bought some plates then 1x6 kangaroo leather strops with adhesive backing from gritomatic. Now I use gunny juice but you can use diamond paste, spray etc. Doesn't do much as far as BESS results but takes less time to get the same results on super steels as the microfilm does....and is less expensive. If I didn't own any super steels and I wanted the super shine, then I would have stuck with the lapping films as they do put quite a shine on softer metals. Also get a hard felt block to debur the super steels before using the films. They are not strops, they are abrasives. They do not remove the micro burr.

The difference mainly is cost and speed. Diamond lapping film is very hard to get and 10x more expensive and doesn't necessarily produce better results. If money is no object, get the diamond lapping film from 3M if you can find it.
