You are correct. I've had mine for 2 years and no melting yet. I like to do the pyramid with the charcoal. I put a wine cork soaked in alcohol and cover it with the charcoal, works really good. Just get a mason jar filled with wine corks and soak them in alcohol.

I agree. I use a charcoal starter 100% of the time. Another thing you can do is have a hot zone and cool zone. I put a 8x10 aluminum pan under to create the separation on one side.

I've had mine, for a few years, now. When not in use, it's under a cover, either in my garage, or up against the house. Sometimes I use a coal chimney, sometimes I don't. I never user paper, as I just don't keep newspaper around the house. So, if I'm not using Match-Light, I'm using the starter fluid. Either way, the coals get right, before I shut the lid. I've got one little rust spot, and it's on that strip of metal that hides behinds the stainless ash pan, on the front of the grill. No big deal. That probably has more to do with being surrounded by saltwater, in a really humid area, in the South, than with grill quality, or grill abuse. My wife picked that thing up on clearance, for about $60. The cover was probably another $10-15. I've gotten my moneys worth, out of it. I'd buy it again, at the current price of $97. But, I don't have to, as it still has plenty of life left in it. The only thing I've really done to it, is added a couple of hooks. Of course, the new ones have those. Overall, considering the price, I'd recommend the grill. It's done fine, for me.

I always use a chimney. You can buy fire starters cheap. I got a box of 48 for 10 bucks. It only takes one for a full chimney. They look like little squares you break off. I think they're coated in wax, they give a good flame for a good while. Always gets my chimney started. Plus I don't want lighter fluid taste in my food.

Hmmm..... interesting analysis. How odd today that many people don't realize the grills like most other products are made with inferior material. I remember back in the 70's and 80's you could buy a cheap grill for $2 and never needed an chimney fire starter to keep the metal from warping or the paint from peeling. Today's products are not made with quality so you are right when you have to do extra steps to even use inferior products when we should not have to do this. If I could buy an old grill when they made them with quality metal I would buy a used one in a heartbeat! Today they do sell you junk and for 3 times as much as it should cost! Do some research and see the difference in the quality of materials use from old products to today. Each decade the products get worse and worse. Back in the day nobody had to use a chimney starter with a basic cheap grill. Most people have never heard of one and never used one! We certainly didn't and being southerner's we grilled a lot. I never heard of a chimney starter until now! I wish I could purchase an old grill like the one we owned growing up. It was not made of cheap metal like the ones today and it was dirt cheap!

I do agree with you that generally stuff was made better back in the day. But considering all old stuff you find is rusted to shit, I’d say that it wasn’t that much better. Plus everything was painted with lead paint before the 70s. That stuff was great.

It's stamped sheet metal, your running at 6-700 degrees at startup. Of course it's gonna start rusting and rotting. That's a quarter of steels melting point. On top of that your dousing the briquettes with a chemical and I'm sure that is making it hotter.

I wait until mine is completely cooled. And I take a little hand broom and sweep the charcoal tray, the ash falls through the holes into the ash pan. Then I just pull out the ash tray and dump it in the garbage. It's easy. If any ash spills on the ground I just sweep it up. I always clean out the ash after every cook when it's cooled down.

Yeah !! The coal tray is usually the first thing to rust out on all these grills, it's real thin metal, in my 15 year old rust bucket grill, I used a old bird cage that I cut to fit the bottom of the grill, to keep the hot coals off the bottom of grill after the coal tray rusted away,,, works great, been using it like that for the last 10 years, and it's still holding up !!! :)

Can you put tin foil down? Or does that stunt the air flow?
@vernon8337

@@Blackdog4818 you want to try to keep the hot coal off the direct bottom of you grill, the heat from the coals will cause the metal to lose it's strenth and rust faster, you can use things like metal cookie racks that set up a little of the bottom of the grill, plus it lets air flow threw and the coal ash falls threw so your coals will burn better.

Mine burnt the paint off but never rusted. Although being on its 5th season, the wind consumed the cover. I'm looking at replacing it or pressure washing it. It's still in decent shape though being 5 years old. If I get a new grill, I will most likely get the same. But I stand by my word. Self lighting and lighter fluid is why they rust so quick.

Ok first off To solve this problem season your grill inside and out with olive oil, vegetable oil, or canola oil real good to prevent rust buildup and use foil pans to put your charcoal in. And get a grill cover end of story.

I got this grill but the lid temp gauge didn't seem like it was working. I did NOT use as much charcoal as you, and was trying to cook some chicken. It did cook the chicken when I raised the tray all the way up, but a lot of water came out of the chicken when I finally pulled it off. I thought maybe it wasn't hot enough, so I put it in the oven for 30 minutes. Is there a known problem with the lid gauge?
