Hello dolls, 🌼
and welcome to "Explaining 60s Wedding Fashion"!
Join me on a trip through time back to the fabulous weddings of the 1960s as we're going to look at some of the most beautiful wedding dresses of the decade!
The early 1960s retained some of the classic elements of the 1950s, but soon enough, bridal fashion began to evolve. A-line silhouettes replaced the full skirts of the previous decade, and empire waists became the most popular cut for brides. Sweetheart necklines and long sleeves were replaced by high necks, three-quarter lengths, and capped sleeves. By the mid-1960s, bridal couture saw more radical changes that would have shocked conservative brides of the 1950s. The tea-length dress of the '50s evolved into the miniskirt, and mod-styled dresses became popular for trendier brides. Patterns, colors, texture, and shape were all played with during this vibrant decade.
When model Pattie Boyd married George Harrison of The Beatles in 1966, her wedding outfit perfectly captured the mod spirit. She wore a Mary Quant-designed dress with a high neck, long sleeves, and a short hemline. Pattie accessorized with white tights and shoes, creating a chic and youthful bridal look that was quintessentially ‚60s.
Celebrity weddings in the 1960s played a significant role in shaping bridal fashion. Icons like Pattie Boyd and Sharon Tate set trends that were quickly adopted by brides around the world. These high-profile weddings were often covered extensively in the media, influencing the choices of countless brides-to-be.
By the late 1960s, the influence of the hippie movement began to seep into wedding fashion. "Flower child" aesthetics became popular, with brides opting for more relaxed and bohemian styles. Empire waists, flowing fabrics, and daisy patterns were all the rage. Brides often wore flowers in their hair, and wedding ceremonies became more informal and intimate.
In 1968, actress Sharon Tate married director Roman Polanski in a wedding that epitomized the late '60s bohemian vibe. Tate wore a silk mini-dress designed by Alba, featuring a high neckline and long sleeves, with a short, skirt. She completed her look with a simple hairstyle adorned with flowers, embodying the carefree spirit of the time.
1960s Wedding fashion remains a nostalgic lacy and crochet minidress dream capturing the era's dreamy weddings.
