We're going out for a nice summer sail and I use this opportunity to teach the crew about AIS (Automatic Identification System), which is the VHF based transponders used by marine craft to track each other on the water.
AIS is required on commercial ships. Although it is optional on pleasure craft, a large number of boats in our harbor have them. So this was excellent practice. Normally, new larger boats like ours have AIS pre-installed.
It was fun to practice with many live targets and watch the user interface for identifying an approaching vessel. The alert flashes based on a pre-configured CPA (Closest Point of Approach).
This is not radar so only boats with AIS can be seen, as we demonstrate in real life.
