Ive seen videos that try to explain aging your authority without running loads and it definitely went over my head. Once on the road though I know the first several months can be rough because of a young authority.

Absolutely, the first year is generally rough. You can get some freight going pretty good after 6 months though, especially sticking with good brokers. So much has changed in one year though, if I was starting right now it would be much harder.

Yep, when people ask me how to age their MC without being a new hotshot I tell them have A LOT of money if that’s what they want to do.

Exactly. I’ve heard other people talk about it on their channel and say to get the minimum insurance required to activate your authority and then it should be cheaper, but that’s still $750,000 liability so that’s still going to cost a lot.

@@Blue_Sky_Hotshots HAPPY RESURRECTION SUNDAY!!! same, I come across that too and I always see that or just people asking. I don’t know anyone who has actually done it fully through the 6 months to a year. It would be nice to hear how expensive it is or was or how it went.

I've been watching some of your videos along with others doing Hotshot. I've been a mason since i was a kid and I'm 61 now still working full time. My kids are grown and on their own so i live alone and like it that way. I've always had trucks and trailers and enjoy hauling things so I'm considering this line of work. I hate the thought of "retiring", i think it would too boring. I have a f450 flatbed i use for my masonry business, I've never had a trailer longer than 20 feet though, the materials i haul are heavy so anything longer wouldn't be necessary. I'd like to hear your thoughts on someone my age doing what you're doing. Masonry is a lot of physical labor, the benefit of that has kept me in great shape to this point but i am 61. A friend of mine has a 40' gooseneck he's thinking of selling. I like the length but it's dual wheels so im thinking i wouldn't really need one rated that high? Let me know your thoughts and I'll keep watching your videos. And BTW I did subscribe to your channel.

I absolutely think you could do it, and having a 450 with a 40ft is a great way to go. What year is the truck and trailer, are they relatively low miles and great condition? The only reason I ask is so you don’t get hit with expensive maintenance issues early on. I’ll tell you the same thing I’ve been telling anyone that asks, I’d definitely look into leasing onto a company that way you have the chance at consistent freight, new authority’s are getting shut down left and right because they can’t even put freight on their trailers.

@Blue_Sky_Hotshots the truck is a 99, it's older but it's low mileage and in very good condition. I don't know the year of the trailer but it looks newer, the owner hardly ever uses it. He's retired and it sits parked on his property. It's a PJ and he's asking 14k for it. I haven't looked at it closely, the way it's parked I can't tell if it has ramps or not? Seems like from what I've seen ramps would be ideal compared to a trailer without. Thanks for your input, leasing on with a company starting out makes sense. I'm currently busy with my masonry business, my thoughts are to go ahead and get my CDL, buy a trailer and prepare myself without going into debt. Use my current truck to start out and save whatever I make to buy a newer truck. I don't really have any bills so it wouldn't take much time to buy one. The 7.3 isn't a powerhouse but I've towed pallets of stone with it for my masonry work and it does the job.

Question: if I already have a DOT and insurance for my junk hauling business, would that count for getting my MC number started? I plan to get a semi when I retire from my day job.

The DOT number can definitely be used.Don’t quote me but insurance has to be at least $750k auto liability in order to activate an MC numbers authority I believe. So if you have that then all you’d need to do is pay $300 to FMCSA for an MC number and to activate the for hire carrier authority.

Can you get an ins quote without paying $300 for an MC#? I already have the dot#

Yes you can, in fact that’s the best way to start doing this that way you know how much the insurance will be and if it’s even worth exploring.
