Always start out with designer fragrances. Once you have tried the wonderful variety of amazing scents. Then dip your nose into Niche fragrances. If you don't try Designer fragrances first, you will be missing out on Fragrances that you will prefer that are much cheaper. Still expensive, but not Niche expensive. E.g. you go out and buy a Roja perfume before trying out Bleu de Chanel, or Dior Sauvage, etc.

That is what I did. When I first started out, money, not desire controlled my purchases. In time, I became bored and wanted more. So this meant I had to be willing to pay more. Reviewers help so much because you help make the unknown known. And so the blind buy gets a “peek” before purchase. Started out at 6. Now I am approaching 450. But this is nowhere near what reviewers have. But it’s my journey not a race. I get what I want when I can. If I want niche, I’ll either save for it or use a payment plan. But it is very possible to acquire many niche fragrances.. it just may take me longer to do so.

Niche isn’t strictly a brand does only fragrance, that’s a generalisation to keep the video simple. The early 2000s is what spurred the ‘niche’ movement of perfumers making less mainstream fragrances. It is sort of a subjective term, but I would not classify clone houses as niche and I would classify most private lines of designer brands as niche.

Chanel is “niche quality” they use high end naturals and synthetic ingredients and refuse to discount any frags. A lot of niche fragrances don’t appeal to the masses, they are more of an art form. They will do things like take raw ingredients from 4 corners of the world just to make a fragrance and say they did. In return that’s very expensive.

He's using the term "same scent profile" rather elastically when comparing PDM Layton and D+G The One. Layton has a powerfully strong citrus and camphorous, Vicks Vaporub smell in the opening, then dries down to a citrus-vanilla base notes. Meanwhile, The One has a light, fresh, aromatic, sweet, spicy, light tobacco and beautiful amber notes. Those two could not smell more different. He might as well have said they have the same scent profile because they are liquids which men spray on themselves to smell nicer than body sweat.
