When The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild came out in 2017, it was a landmark achievement in video game history and created a new standard for open worlds and the action/adventure genre.
Put simply, Breath of the Wild is a game that's all about re-cultivating a decayed landscape and civilization, and saving a world that was once thought to be beyond saving.
Tears of the Kingdom still has those themes, but this time, it has more to say as well.
It's a story about sacrifice, the consequences of freedom, and misinterpretation.
It's about rebuilding the world, sure, but it's asking us to question what it is we are rebuilding? Why we want to return to the ordered world? Won't it simply collapse again?
Like, seriously, isn't Ganondorf just gonna return in some new form in a few years anyway?
Why should people- why should Link and Zelda, need to fight through the tears and forge on in spite of immense destruction?
This is what Tears of the Kingdom asks us, and the answers it provides, can only be described, as worthy of the legend.
