Dear friends of this region - with roots that delve deep into the earth and branches that reach towards the sky, I am the ancient oak that has stood tall for hundreds of years, witnessing life around me. I am the oldest tree in all of London.
Back in the early 19th century, people began to call me the “meeting tree”. I served as a space for asylum seekers who escaped slavery through the Underground Railroad. Today, I see mostly hikers, families, and lovers of nature.
As you walk about this place you call “Westminster Ponds”, I urge you to pause and listen to the whispers of the wind through the leaves of the trees, and the gentle rustle of creatures that call this place home.
As I have stood rooted through the past, in the history of this land, I am also mindful of the future. Together, as a community, we must sow the seeds of change.
So, come, my friends, on a journey of exploration - of ReForest London, and the past, present, and future of Westminster Ponds.
