I have four of these telescopes (two carbon fibre and two white-tube), and the one thing that is consistent between them is that when they arrive from the factory the micro focus knob is not activated (it spins freely on all four telescopes). This video seems to be missing that part of the setup which is how to engage the fine focus mechanism.

Ahh finally I know what the central knob on top is for... rotating the focuser. Thank you! I wish there was a manual for my hexa foc focuser (if there is I couldn’t find it).

I need to stop overtightening things... Life long bad habit! I have some grittiness going on so I'm going to try out taking that block off and seeing if I can get it cleaned. Great video, thanks!

Great video. Explore Scientific should be doing more of them for their community. The included instructions with the ED CF 127 telescope are by far not enough and there is a lot of room for improvement.

That hasn't changed. The included instructions with the AR127 were none. There is an online PDF that covers all their scopes - it's all text.

2:20 The three screws plus tensioning knob are not a very good design as a rotator. Loosening the tensioning knob and spinning the focuser means everything's riding on those 3 screws instead of a smooth groove and you can get scratches. If you forget to tighten the tensioning knob, the focuser will be out of collimation... I ordered an M54 rotator to mount on the draw tube and will keep the scope's rotator locked indefinitely.

I installed a zwo eaf and since then I can't get it to work like it was :( When focuser goes in, it moves smoothly, when backing up it moves hardly and the 1:10 knob stopped working for some odd reason. It looks really easy thing to do, but for some reason it turned out to be a pandora's box for me. :(((

My course knob on the right started to just spin freely. Although you didn't cover it here, I was able to see a tiny hole for a hex. There is a tiny hex screw in there. I tighten it and it works perfectly.

Doh! Unscrewing the holder for extensions - ESRPEXT2. I've been struggling with finding the right extensions to achieve focus with my Flattener/CCD. Oh and be careful, the rack and pinion can fall out! (don't ask how I know)

Thank you for the video. I have an ED 80 and ED 127. I enjoy them. However the eyepiece clamp can be a problem when I try insert the 2” diagonal or camera. Does a Baader clicklock fit the focuser by screwing on the focuser just as an extension tube to replace the eyepiece clamp?

I have the Essential Series 127mm ED refractor purchased in 2016 with this type of R and P focuser. The three Allen head grub screws constantly get loose and causes significant play in the body of the focuser. I've carefully adjusted and tightened them numerous times. During a viewing or an AP session, it is unavoidable to not overly tighten the single thumbscrew that locks the focuser in place when the Allen screws loosen and the focuser wobbles. As indicated over tightening the thumbscrew causes a permanent dent in the metal ring where it makes contact. This occurs over and over and results in multiple rough spots causing the rotation to be very rough. Tightening this thumbscrew is the only reliable option to keep the focuser from having play. Ironically, this thumbscrew does not have a nylon tip so it's metal on metal. Watch the video at 5:59 to 6:03 seconds to see this play and wobble in the video. I spoke to an ES representative at NEAF 2017 and the only advice was to keep the Allen screws adjusted and to not overtighten the thumb screw. There are numerous forum comments on Cloudy Nights about users who dislike these focusers and seek to change them. This is a design flaw that degrades an otherwise excellent scope.

I don't use this part to rotate the focuser, I locked down the screws completely and only use the 2" compression ring to rotate eyepieces or camera. Otherwise the camera focal plane can be out of whack. I realize that means the focuser knob is sometimes in an inconvenient position but that's just the way it has to be.

I 3D printer a wedge profiled "piston ring" of ABS that fits tight in the rotator groove. Very little lubricant first in the groove and carefully try to push it in to place. Original three screws cuts in to the ring and locks it. Rotation is now silk smooth and keeps the collimation perfectly.

This video is almost 4 years old. A lot of the comments are about as old. And yet, despite the obvious need to create more detailed instructions for this scope, Explore Scientific still won’t include detailed instructions with a new scope. This is truly one of the most bizarre failures in customer service that I’ve ever seen. Such an easy fix, yet, nothing. Even the description for this video claims it’s a basic instruction video. What is with you, Explore Scientific? Provide some damn detailed instructions. You want me to write them for you???

Thank you Guru Hunsenh. Over the years there have been steady improvements to focusers on telescope throughout the industry, Explore Scientific included. But there is always room for improvement on hardware as astrophotographers improve their skills with the equipment. This is why we also work closely with our own development team and third party developers so that we can best serve our clientele and they can continue to focus on getting image data. While our standard focusers have been successfully used by astrophotographers, you can easily upgrade. Our current third party suppliers of focusers include Starlight Instruments and Moonlight.

Great, One other thing is the thumb screws with compression rings are so dated , threading on this will wear out.. Instead of thumb screws there should be an outer ring that can tighten the focuser similar to Roto Locker . Also, many have complained about lens cell being lose after being shipped to them. To me its the scariest thing on a 152 mm lens cell sitting lose in a telescope barrel right out of the box. Looks like tight packaging is another overlooked QC. Hope QC catches up fast with the rest of the market.

Thanks Guru, I would invite you to visit our company and to see how we do QA. Every Explore Scientific telescope has gone through QA inspection in our Asian Factory and then without exception goes through a secondary QA process in our facility in Arkansas. I can't say that we have never made a mistake, but our returns for repair and for defectives is very low. But I too have experienced loose screws on many telescopes from vibration in shipment, and I typically work on my own telescopes so I know how they are built. This goes back to when I when I started telescope retail in 1980 with all kinds of telescope brands when I was establishing the business that became OPT. Then in 1986 I worked for 21 years with Meade Instruments, and then finally starting my own company, Explore Scientific in 2008. Over the years I have travelled with telescopes all over the globe and the strangest things can happen with vibration during shipment. Probably my most memorable was when the Meade 8-inch SCT that I built myself arrived in Florida with every screw completely loose and many of them falling out. Had I not have built the entire telescope myself, I would have never believed that this could be a shipping issue. Regardless of the cause when we hear of problems we do respond to it. Please call me so that I know your focuser is being returned (949) 637-9075, and we will get to work for you :-) Scott Roberts

mine I think is older. It has no rotating screw and has no focus tension - other than two thumb screws on the bottom - but they don't do anything. If anything, it seems looser if they are tightened? I contacted chat on your website and someone said they would email me the adjustments to be made. and recieved nothing.

This is outdated - 2020 AR127 has a different focuser and I can't find any documentation or videos on it. By this time Explore Scientific should really have something available - no excuses!! There is also no way to rotate the focuser that I can see, and the two mystery screws at the bottom, each a different size, are just that - a mystery.
