There is a very interesting site in the Lake Champlain Islands: a fossilized reef from the Ordovician Period that dates back to 480 million years ago and is one of the very oldest fossil reefs in the world. At that time, there was hardly any terrestrial life but marine life was becoming more diverse. This fascinating site is hidden on Isle La Lotte, Vermont and is not well known but well worth a visit if you are in the area and interested in Earth history. I visited in November 2022.
