I work at Clairton Coke Works the 2nd biggest coke plant in the world and biggest active plant in North America, pretty sad seeing how this plant ended up. But if anyone has questions about how it would of worked I can definitely tell you the process

I currently work at ABC COKE in alabama, we arethe largest producer of foundry coke in the United States as of now, its definitely an interesting process because coke plants dont just make coke out of coal, tar is also made, gases coming from the cooking coal is reused and fed back into the ovens to be reused, we also make Salt like that is used for putting into gardens and fields and also winter road salt. Its definitely more to it than what i thought when i first got hired on. Stay safe everyone! Oh and be careful around and inside alot of those old buildings because of the asbestos inside.

8:56 was the coke ovens. The quenching car ran on the rails in front of it to catch the coke and take it for cooling after being pushed out. When an oven like this cools to ambient and sits idle, it damages the bricks in the ovens so that bank usually cannot be reactivated.

May I respectfully suggest that you don’t wear that higher visibility Red Jacket, you should wear all black clothes, and wear gloves, leave no fingerprints behind, be stealthy. Just a suggestion. Be safe out there. 😊

That's a thaw shed. Piping along the rails was for natural gas.

This plant had to be very expensive to setup. Equipment is depreciated and reaches $0 at some point. When that happens, write offs are lost and taxes go up. Most of these businesses know how to shelter money. But something happened to make this plant no longer profitable. It's complex. The EPA didn't help I'm sure. Also cheaper overseas sources like China providing coke. China now leads the world in steel production which should be the USA but we pissed it away. So much of what used to be thriving industry now lays in ruins for urban explorers to enjoy.

What a shame all that equipment laying fallow and the jobs that went with it.

Imagine the people that were killed and disable working at this place during it's years of operation.
