Known and treasured through Huddersfield's community and a professional eccentric for over 40 years Jake Mangle-Wurzel has had his ups and downs bared all over the world.
Jake Mangle-Worzel born as John Grey changed his persona in the late 1970s living in a cottage known as Wurzel Land in the outskirts of Huddersfield He said his life was based on the principle of "wurzeling", which he described as "behavior denoting freedom of expression governed only by strong moral conscience and signifying rejection of the restrictive influences of the establishment"
A true professional eccentric who was featured in Channel 4's worst hoarders and had a documentary titled Mr. Somebody created about him and his life by Michelle Highway
John Gray staged his own funeral. His ‘body’ was carried around on a horse and cart near his home and his coffin was placed inside a tomb in his garden when he emerged from his coffin an hour later he had taken on a whole new persona and became Jake Jonathon Zebedee Mangle-Wurzel. He changed his name by deed poll and the ‘King of the Eccentrics’ was born.
Jake loved his dogs and one of them became one of his seven wives along with a 19-year-old female mud wrestler who for the wedding wore the trousers and Jake wore a white wedding dress and silver Wellington boots.
The ‘happy’ couple parted immediately after the service and the marriage was never consummated. It was a statement about the enslavement of marriage.
Being a professional eccentric in Jake earned good money from national papers in the 1980s and 1990s for his bizarre stunts and acts and drew on the dole which he claimed was government pay for entertaining the nation.
In 2007 Jake appeared before a judge in Cumbria accused of threatening two children with a knife. Appearing under another of his pseudonyms, Thomas Henry Erasmus Occupier (THE Occupier), he was convicted of affray, a charge he vehemently denied.
Jake Mangle-Worzel passed away in August 2021 from skin cancer and ideally wanted to be buried on his own land in a tomb he spent 12 years constructing.
He will be missed by many in Huddersfield and it is sad to see that his possessions are now left abandoned however he has definitely earned his right as part of Huddersfield's history and should not be forgotten.
