ADDITIONAL TIPS FROM THE COMMUNITY (feel free to let me know what else we should add here): * Reddit user u/shinitakunai left the following feedback -- "I think you forgot to include the biggest advice that a new person needs to know: Disable "melee assist target assistance". It's an option that prevents you to dodge through targeted enemies. It's very annoying because most of the time the safest spot is in the back of an enemy, so you of course want to dodge through it. By default, it comes enabled, which is a /facepalm. Also, enable the option under it, it will allow you to always cast skills on the maximum range instead of showing "error, too far". That's great for skills like teleports when you need to run away. Also useful to not cancel skills by mistake."

i got some additional tips: 1. Disable double-tap to dodge in the options, might seem useful to have at first but will make anyone fail some platforming sooner or later. 2. When starting out some map completion icons will be hidden until your level has increased, dont get confused if you dont see some of them - like hero points - for a while. If you want to get completion for a starter map you will likely have to revisit earlier parts once things are properly shown and available to you. 3. Do you have some questions or problems ingame and there is a place with a small crowd of other players around? GW2-players are a overall helpful bunch - dont be afraid to ask in say-chat (shortcut to switch "/s [your message]"). You can also click on someone name in chat to open whisperchat with them (limited to one new person per short time interval on free-to-play account to combat spammers & gold sellers). Worst case you get ignored because they're busy, but best case you make a new friend that tags along for a while and comes back to do so again in the days after ;-)

Best tip I have for New and even experienced players is: Start adding people to your friendlist and seting nicknames for them. Exemple: You just did a Hero Point train in Heart of Thorns maps. Add the Commander in your friendlist, set his or her nickname to "HP train commander" So everytime that this Commander comes online you can ask if he is about to do another HP train. Or a nice leading commander in WvW. A excelent Commander in Dragon Fall, etc. Sometimes you can even Join in the LFG Just to add commanders to your friendlist.

I am so happy and impressed with your video. I am new to Guild Wars 2 and have watched many beginner guide videos, some better than others, but let there be no mistake about it, yours is hands down the best beginner guide there is - at least from what I have watched so far. I'll probably watch the whole series in one sitting, lol, and then I'll be revisiting them all and watch them little by little because they are so filled with useful content, tips and guidance. Thank you so much for making and sharing this video. 🙂 👍

Thanks for the kind words. I'd love to go back and redo many of the videos in series. I've evolved my style over time, learned some tricks, changed editing software, etc. Also a few things have changed in the Boons/Condition video (some of the effects don't function the way I initially described them). In any event, if you have ANY questions and feel like reaching out, feel free to swing by our discord server. Just tag yourself with whatever roles/interests you have in that channel and ask questions in the gw2-questions channel. We're happy to help! discord.gg/HZv8bRVVV4

Great intro video! A few observations (some of which are things that have changed since this video was made). HEARTS. If you come from a game like WoW, it's easy to mistake these for a core quest mechanic. Well - no. They give XP, yes, and you will need to do them if you want to do map (and world) completion. And they become merchants once they're done. But in the base game most of what they sell is of very limited use, unless you're doing particular crafting. And to some players they feel like grinds. If you find that you don't enjoy them, you can pretty much ignore them, until you have a reason, without remotely affecting your game progress. Plus many of them you'll progress, or even complete, just by doing open world stuff while you're in their area. BROKEN ARMOR (Cracked red shield): No longer a thing. The game mechanics that used to let you repair broken armor now give you a (very modest, long-lasting) buff instead. WORLD BOSSES: Chickenooble says "Get there early, because maps fill up quick". Yes, but needs qualifying. (Sorry if we need to get a little technical here.) When a map is full, the game just starts another copy, and puts extra players there as they arrive. But if the boss is tough - and some of the ones that used to be easier have been made more challenging recently lately - then, yes, you'll want to be on a map with lots of players. Don't get there late is still good advice. (If you're in a party with a friend and you end up in different copies of the same map, one of you may be able to swap. Right-click your friend's portait (near top left of your screen) - which will show them as a black silhouette until you're in the same copy of the same map - and select the option that says "Join in Queensdale" (or whatever the map is called). If their map isn't totally full, you'll be swapped to join them. And if you don't see the option, mouse over their portrait and check the hover text - you're likely in different maps altogether. AUTOLOOT: Unless I'm getting seriously confused, the option on Autoloot that will automatically put loot into your inventory as it drops ("Quick Interact") isn't initially available to new accounts (so get used to hitting the "F" key on autopilot every time you kill something). You unlock it by training the "Advanced Logistics" Mastery. I'm guessing Mastery Points are covered in another of Chickenooble's videos. MOUNTS: Full accounts now get automatic access to the basic Raptor mount when their first character hits level 10. And one minor point of irrelevant trivia, mentioned by the video: PERSONAL STORIES: Without exception, every new character currently gets EXACTLY 49 episodes in their base Personal Story (plus the one that introduces the character). At the end of some episodes you will get a choice to make, and your pick will control precisely what later episodes you see. Quite when the choices occur varies very slightly according to your precise path through your story - but in the end, every character gets the same number of choices and episodes. Oh, and your race affects what episodes you see, but your choice of profession has no effect.

Nice video. ArenaNet should take incorporate some of these hints into the game their new players. Especially during character creation there should be something mentioning the differences in difficulty for the various professions rather than ANet's current policy of telling new players "Just pick any profession, it won't make any difference!" when that's clearly not true.

Speaking as another 58 year old who's new to MMOs (though I've been playing tabletop RPGs since college), will you be doing a video on crafting? One thing I'll share here that I was going to put in the video is this website: gw2crafts.net/ It'll show you the most cost-effective way to level a crafting discipline and if you link your API key it'll use your material storage to help bring the cost down.

I have a tip as well, start with the 5 cities, you will be level 10 when you are done, or close to it... you can start your personal plus you have gained some levels and you buy new gear, another tip: buy every 10th level new gear, minimum blue, max green. Yellow is too expensive at the start.

Thank you for creating such a detailed video, definitely one of the best beginner's guide out there, good for refreshing memories too! Will be watching the inventory management video next! Thanks for the kind words! The channel started in October and I'm dwarfed by some of the other larger content creators in the community (they're big and it's hard to get out of that shadow). It's hard to stand out when their content comes up in searches first. But now that ArenaNet recruited me into their Partnership program I have more opportunities for growth and exposure -- and getting noticed by ArenaNet was largely due to the support and signal boosting from larger (or large numbers of) voices in the community. I'm very thankful for the response and support from everyone. It's been great and it helps me reach more people who might need the videos to enjoy the game.

Chickenooble that’s so cool, didn’t know that this partnership program existed. It’s a win-win situation, potential players will know how to start the game off well and KZitemrs get to grow their channel. Autoloot: Quick Interact is the one that is from Advanced Logistics. The other two can be toggled on new accounts. One will loot without opening up the loot bag window, and the other will loot multiple enemies around you at once. I should've been more clear about this (the dangers of recording footage on veteran accounts I guess!). Appreciate the comment so we could clear this up for any novices that might watch this video!
