Hi and Welcome to this new video! #travel we are exploring the Arundel Castle.
There are nearly 1,000 years of history at this great castle, situated in magnificent grounds overlooking the River Arun in West Sussex and built at the end of the 11th century by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel.
Discover in this great castle and its glorious gardens, with magnificent views over the Sussex countryside and the river Arun.
Gardens
A wonderful variety of landscapes and environments, from the quirky Stumpery to the formal Collector Earl’s garden to the warmth of the Glasshouses, there are explosions of colour, delicate aromas and structural designs to delight you.
State Rooms
During the 18th and 19th centuries the defensive castle was transformed into an amazing stately home for the Dukes of Norfolk. Fine art, fabulous furniture and intricately carved statues are in contrast to the flint hardness of the early fortifications. Wander through the state rooms, including the richness of the Regency library, the grandeur of the Barons’ Hall and the decorative Drawing room.
The Bedrooms
Everyone loves to see a bedroom in a grand house and here you can see the individually decorated bedrooms with Victorian and Edwardian bathrooms.
Fitzalan Chapel
Founded in 1380 by the 4th Earl of Arundel, the chapel has had a varied history, including damage during the Civil War in 1643-4. After a period of neglect, it was restored during the 19th century and is now one of our lovely surprises for you to find in our gardens.
Inner Gatehouse & Barbican
Medieval defences with towers, portcullis, drawbridge and gates. All built to protect the castle and those living inside. Have a go at dressing up in costume from key periods in our history.
The Keep
Designed for defence in the 11th century, to see the coast and control the river, to prevent strong warriors attacking and to dominate the local area. You can now climb the stone steps up into the Keep, squeeze along the narrow passages and enjoy the magnificent views from the top of the walls. Our informative guides will bring the place to life for you.
An interesting fact...The Duke of Norfolk is also the Earl Marshal of England, a title the family have held for over 500 years. The Earl Marshal organises major ceremonial State events such as the opening of Parliament
