Exploring Connecticut Section 1 on the Appalachian Trail
MA/CT Border to CT-41 (Undermountain Road)
We continue our series on How to Section Hike the Appalachian Trail through Connecticut with a close-up look at Section 1.
We hiked this on May 20, 2024. We were super excited to kick off our series of Connecticut AT hikes on a beautiful warm and sunny spring day. Twitch's girlfriend Gerry joined us on this outing, so it made sense to travel with two cars again. We rented an Airbnb home for Sunday night and then hit the trail Monday morning. We parked at the lot on Undermountain Road at the end of the section. This is the lot that is situated in a pine grove between two private homes. Unfortunately, we lost the video clip from that lot at the start of the day. Then we had a 40-minute drive up to the start. We decided to take the better roads up through MA which goes around Mt. Everett and then back down to the CT border. It really added a lot of overall time to the day. We parked in the small lot for AMC Northwest Cabin. It's a short .8 mile walk to the AT and MA/CT border where we began our southern trek through Section 1. The steepest, most challenging part of the hike comes right at the start when you ascend Bear Mountain. After that it's mostly a gradual descent with one final short ascent over Lion's Head. Great views all day long!
Here we show you all the details from available parking throughout this section of the trail to all the points-of-interest to see along the way.
A final trail activity summary is included at the end showing the mileage splits, elevation gain and duration.
