The Moroccan traveller Ibn Batutta visited this area in 1346 and in his journal he complains about the stench of dried fish. I must say Carrie, I am amazed by your energy, and at just how comfortable you are in such foreign surroundings. Thank you for such incredible videos.. Oh wow! I had no idea dried fish business is such a big industry in Bangladesh and it is one of the premiere supplier in the world. I love dried fish. And smoked fish. And fish in general. I wonder if dried fish from Bangladesh is available here in the USA, I have always seen them in Chinese stores in Chinatown but I'm not sure of the source country of their product. I will check with Bangladeshi grocery shops when I will visit New York City. I love dried fish dishes of Bangladesh, especially the sautéed ones with little to no gravy and spicy hot 😁 (শুঁটকি ভুনা ঝাল তরকারী)! Yes, I wonder about the sustainability of the fish stock in the Bay of Bengal too. I hope Bangladesh government and all stakeholders in the industry will take care to maintain a healthy fish population and keep it sustainable. Cox's Bazaar indeed looks fun. Someday I will visit, insha Allah ! 😊

Definitely worth checking the stock in local stores.. I am going to check my local Bangladeshi stores when I get back to london! And yes let’s hope sustainability is being focused on and planned because the local Bangladeshi people working there don’t deserve to struggle.. 🤞

You are a very different vlogger going deep into everything! How could you survive the stinky smell of drying fish for such a long time! Thanks for showing us the vast little known industry. Actually dried fish is an everyday essential item of the menu in Chittagong, Noakhali and Sylhet. And by the passage of time and local tourism dried fish curries have become popular with almost the whole of Bangladesh. In 60s and 70s people of Northern part would just ridicule the people of the districts eating shutki! Now they are also in love of dried fish. As well as being tasty ( but it has to be an acquired taste, first time someone may not like it at all), it is also very nutritious being rich in minerals and vitamins. The fishes you saw are all sea fish but sweet water fishes from river and ponds are also dried in Sylhet and Noakhali. They prefer those dry fishes more than the sea fishes. There is another form of dry fish which is fermented underground in a bamboo tube which is too smelly but a hit with those who like it( hidol or chapa shutki)!
