In this explore, you join us at Shepton Mallet Prison, often referred to as Cornhill or The Mallet. It housed it's first set of inmates in 1625. Rather than using lengthy prison sentences, capital punishments were more commonly used. By the end of the 1700s, over 200 crimes were punishable by the death penalty
Due to the size of the inmate population and the deterioration of the site, the decision was taken to close the prison in 1930. During WW2, the prison re-opened as a military prison, reverting back to a civilian prison In 1966, with it becoming at CAT-C prison from 2001 - housing serious male offenders.
The prison was finally decommissioned on 28th March 2013.
