Take a tour of the beautiful gardens of this castle, which feature the longest herbaceous border in the world, and a formal Victorian garden before exploring the magnificent castle itself. Although it is now a ruin, there are still plenty of nooks and crannies to explore!
Dirleton Castle was built in the 13th century and is one of Scotland’s oldest surviving strongholds. For 400 years the fortress was home to 3 successive noble families - the Vauxs, the Haliburtons and the Ruthvens. However, the Ruthvens eventual downfall saw it abandoned as a residence before Oliver Cromwell besieged it in 1650 rendering it uninhabitable. In the 1660’s the Nisbet family bought the estate. With the castle in ruins, the Nisbets built a new residence for themselves - the nearby magnificent Archerfield House. (I’ll be making a video of Archerfield soon so make sure you’re subscribed to see it!)
I hope you enjoy this tour of Dirleton Castle and if you’d like to delve into the history a bit more there’s lots of information online.

Exploring East Lothian in Scotland on foot. I've created these walking videos for a variety of reasons - for treadmill users to make their exercise more interesting, for those who want to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of nature for relaxation and to boost their mental health, and for those who want to explore, virtually, new places perhaps before they visit for themselves or just out of curiosity. There are also 1 minute walks in nature for a quick fix!
I want you to enjoy the walks as if you are taking them yourself, so there will be no talking or music. I think that makes a more calming and peaceful experience.
If you enjoy these videos, make sure to subscribe and click the notification bell so that you don't miss out on any new videos.
