Includes descriptions of the locale from the 1603 book A Survey of London by John Stow.
Dowgate was a wharf/watergate on the north bank of the Thames. The area is now dominated by Cannon Street station which is alongside the street of Dowgate. In the text Stow seems unsure whether it is Dowgate or Downgate!
The extent of the ward is as described by Stow, since then many of the wards of London have changed, also Stow's boundaries often do not match those shown on old maps.
The Agas Map is good for visualising how London looked at the time: mapoflondon.uv... . Also Google comes up with detailed old maps of the individual wards.
