By the way, the "long boats" are known as "narrow boats". If they were long boats, they'd be full of berserk Vikings about to raid the city.

Ely is a lovely town, and easy to wander through. The Cathedral is magnificent too. I haven’t been there in many years so it was lovely that you shared it with us. I loved the relaxing music you had in the background too. Thank you for sharing Mac.

You can rent a narrowboat for a few days and potter about on the canals. Its a beautiful holiday. You might enjoy it, the boats don’t rock around very much, so you probably wont feel seasick.

Your tours remind me of Audrey Assad's hymn, I wonder as I wander out under the sky. Last year, the semi-finals of a schools sports contest (where my youngest son participated) put English history in context. The four schools at the semi-finals were: Kings School, Ely (founded in 970), Pilgrims School, Winchester (founded 900), Salisbury Cathedral School (founded 1091), and Wells Cathedral School (founded 909). 4200 yrs of education represented by just four schools. The event was held in Ely. It was a lovely English Spring day and parents and family enjoyed Pims and scones as their boys did all the work. 🙄

Those (long) narrow boats, there are lots of places where you can hire a narrow boat for a unique holiday. Ely has a river, but the narrow boats were designed for the canals, and there’s an extensive network of canals across England. Just a few in Scotland and Wales. You can also hire a boat on the Norfolk Broads, which is an area of connected rivers and broads (lakes). We fell in love with the Norfolk Broads a few years ago and it’s now our favourite place to visit.

Hi guys, Ely eh, I went to school there, historic in the extreme... If you like horses head over to Newmarket, or bump into some fellow Americans in Mildenhall, huge USAF base there. I'm a bit further north in Wisbech, I work as a marine pilot, berthing ships in Cambridgeshire????

Grew up near Ely. The cathedral is known as 'the ship of the fens' and as you might have spotted, is visible from miles away cos the fens are essentially below sea level. Ely is known as the Isle of Ely because in mediaeval times, before the fens were drained into defined waterways, it used to be cut off during rainy periods and people had to row to get to it.

Hi folks! Good to see you again. I hope that you and yours are well, especially the new arrivals.♥ So pleased that you enjoyed Ely. It really is a beautiful place. 🙂 A couple of quick points, if you don't mind. That is not really big enough to be classed as a Dock, it is more of a Mooring. Those Canal Boats are known as Narrow Boats, not Long Boats. Long Boats were what the Vikings used to sail in. 😉

The long boats are narrow boats for navigating the canals that are extensive throughout the UK (the canals predate the railways - built by the navigators (navvies))

The Cam is a tributary of the River Great Ouse which runs through Ely. The river was diverted in mediaeval times, the original course being to the south of the tiny city.

The narrowboats (I think enough people have probably pointed out the whole longboats thing) do tend to have deceptively high cabins, usually about 6'0" to 6'3" or thereabouts because the cabin floor tends to be below the water level (this does cause some "interesting" problems, like the drain in the shower tray also being below the waterline, meaning that the grey water has to be pumped up to get it out).

That was a nice look at Ely the town where I'll probably never go. Maybe I'll try next summer. I've often read of the magnificent Cathedral and it looks like the reality matches up to it's fame. I don't know which video had the wall in but maybe it was Oxford. That city has got a lot of really old walls in it. I think the old canal boat families. I don't think they were actually INSIDE those boats much except to sleep. I think the men and boys were outside running the boat and ensuring the cargo was safe and I think the wives did a lot of the work like cooking and washing laundry etc up on the deck or on the bankside when they were moored up.

@@Ingens_Scherz no, I did not copy you. In fact, I had already remarked on this when he was in another town months ago and called them long boats. I was just gently reminding him of the same thing that I had said before. I certainly do not read everybody else s remarks to copy theirs. And I certainly wouldn't accuse you of having copied this remark from the previous episode where he had said this before.

Nothing on the Isle of Ely? St. Etheldreda=St. Audrey=Tawdry [lace]? It was Cromwell's home, so stained glass survived the Civil War?; So many Ely stories you seem not to have stumbled upon. You will have to go back.
