Ecological artists Patrick Lydon and Suhee Kang spent a summer in Osaka, Japan recently to start a farm and open a concept restaurant, but this isn't your every day urban farm-to-table outfit.
In a quirky twist, the artists didn't have any food at the opening of their restaurant, instead they sent customers home empty handed after ordering their dinner, asking them to come back in several weeks... after their dinner was grown the dirt lot adjacent to the restaurant.
The artists then built a 'natural farm' style garden, grew a slew of summer vegetables and herbs, and invited the community into the garden for weekly 'nature art' workshops. Painting with soil and plant material as a medium, using flowers for art making, and other events ensued, all of it focused on cultivating a deeper relationship between urban dwellers, nature, and the places where we live.
At the end of it all, they crossed their fingers that the customers who ordered dinner would come back to eat it and indeed, they did. The restaurant was full of happy, smiling, people who enjoyed the food, connected more deeply with others in their own neighborhood, and were treated to a display of 'nature art' from the community workshops.
"It's all about building relationships" says Lydon "cultivate a compassionate relationship between people and plants, and people and bugs, and people and soil... and you'll automatically start building better relationships between people and everything outside the garden. It's one of the best ways we know to build stronger, healthier, happier communities, and all it takes is the right mindset and one little piece of land to grow."
