As part of the Re+ initiative, King County is exploring mixed waste processing as a tool to recover valuable resources from our garbage. Mixed waste processing refers to a range of technologies that sort and recover recyclable and reusable resources, such as metal, paper, or organics from the waste stream. These facilities can act as a last screen for our garbage, diverting resources from mixed waste before they reach the landfill. This spring, King County partnered with Georgia-Pacific to study the diversion potential of their mixed waste processing facility, Juno. Data from the three-month project, along with evaluations of other similar technologies, will give the County a better understanding of how mixed waste processing could be integrated into our regional solid waste system in the future, helping us meet our zero waste goals. kingcounty.gov/en/dept/dnrp/w...
