Patwon Ki Haveli Patwon Ki Haveli is an interesting piece of architecture and is the most important of the havelis of Jaisalmer. This is due to exactly two things, first that it was the first haveli built in Jaisalmer and second that it is not a haveli but a group of 5 smaller havelis.
The first of these havelis was built and constructed by Guman Chand Patwa in the year 1805 and is the biggest and most pompous. It is believed that Patwa was a wealthy man and a famous merchant of his time. He could afford and thus ordered the creation of separate stories for each of his 5 sons.
Havelis are also known as 'brocade merchants' havelis'. The name is probably given because the family traded in gold and silver threads used in embroidered fabrics. There are theories, however, that claim that these merchants made a great deal of money by smuggling and money-lending opium.
It is the biggest haveli of Jaisalmer and is situated in a narrow street. This mansion is currently in the possession of the government, which uses it for various purposes. The office of the Archaeological Survey of India and the State Arts and Crafts Department is located in the haveli itself.
Nevertheless, you can still find a good amount of painting and mirror-work on the wall in spite of these encroachments and abuses. Other important aspects are its entrance and arches. You'll see different illustrations and themes on each arch. Although the entire building is made of yellow sandstone, the main entrance of Patwon Ji Ki Haveli is in brown colour
