Current situation...
The Gauteng Infrastructure Department says it plans to spend about R1 billion to revamp the abandoned Kempton Park Hospital on the East Rand, which will help accommodate patients in the area.
The facility shut its doors in 1996, leaving behind millions of rands worth of equipment which has now been damaged or stolen.
Government has spent millions over the years on security to guard the abandoned hospital which has become popular among young people who tour the so called 'haunted' facilities on weekends.
Infrastructure spokesman Mbangwa Xaba says they have a plan to revamp it.
"We will bring it back from its heydays where it had about 200 beds to accommodate a total of 350 beds."
It's submitted its plans to the Gauteng Health Department for approval.
Meanwhile, Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu says her department is still deciding whether it should revamp the abandoned hospital, or re-build it from scratch.
Mahlangu says they need to weigh up the options.
"Currently we have not made the decision as to whether we are going to fix the hospital at R1 billion or if we will be building a new hospital in the same premises. The cost is exorbitant and that's why we are still weighing our options."
