You'll see the local resident Cassowary in Etty Bay for sure. The bird roams the parking there. Main threat around here are the stingers. Most beaches have bottles of ammonia in PVC pipes marked with a red or green medical + stuck to a tree near the beach entrance. The ammonia in the bottles neutralizes the stinger poison, so if you do get stung, immediately apply ammonia and always call the ambulance, because stings from a Box Jellyfish or Irukandji can be fatal - trust me you'll know when you get stung, it'll be like a hot poker is being pressed against your skin. There's also stingray in the waters, they are slow and usually quite friendly, but if you step on them they can sting, and as you probably already know they can also be fatal, so be careful for those, just look for the black tails in the water, that's how you spot them. Never swim near river mouths or mangroves or in rivers or murky waters (crocodiles love them) and never swim during any month with an 'R' in it due to stingers. The wildlife may keep the tourists from swimming on the beaches, but it's nice for the locals since the beaches are nice and quiet and empty most of the time. Mission Beach is what Byron Bay was in the 80s before it became popular - there's a real flower-power vibe. If you visit Cooktown, there's a nice little motel called the Seaview motel, it's a good spot to rest up, nothing special but they have marina views, and the fish and chips is decent at the local chippie there. It can get quite windy in Cooktown so you gotta be lucky with the weather. Make sure to take the Daintree ferry, the drive through the Daintree and Cape Tribulation is fantastic and memorable. Enjoy the rest of your trip! :)

Thanks so much for all the detailed information and recommendations! We’ll definitely keep an eye out for the Cassowary in Etty Bay. The tips about the months with an ‘R’ being stinger season is fascinating, didnt know that-we’ll make sure to stay cautious. The drive through the Daintree and Cape Tribulation is also on our list, and hopefully, if we're lucky, we get to see some saltwater crocodiles! Cheers for all the advice, we really appreciate it!
