Join us on an unforgettable tour of the Ottawa Jail Hostel, one of the most unique and historic accommodations in Canada! Built in 1862 and originally known as the Carleton County Jail, this architectural marvel was designed by Henry Horsey in the Georgian Style, emphasizing proportion, balance, and symmetry. After serving as a prison for 110 years, it was closed in 1972 due to inhumane living conditions and reopened a year later as the Ottawa International Hostel.
In this video, we take you through this incredible building, including the cramped and dingy cells where prisoners were once kept, the warden’s living quarters. You'll also get to see the back courtyard and the infamous death row, where the last public hanging in Canada took place, witnessed by 5000 spectators. The gallows remain fully functional to this day.
During the Doors Open Ottawa event, we had the opportunity to explore these historic spaces and learn about the rich history of the Ottawa Jail Hostel. In 2023, this iconic hostel celebrated 50 years of welcoming guests from around the world, offering a unique glimpse into Canada's past.
