Hope you enjoy my visit to Ruthven Barracks, which is located near Kingussie, just off the A9, in the Scottish Highlands. It's free to visit the Barracks which are open all year round. Ruthven Barracks were built in the early 1700's by George II's government to maintain law and order in the Highlands after the 1715 Jacobite uprising. It's a very atmospheric place, with incredible 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside, and well worth visiting on the way north, or after visting the Highland Folk Museum at nearby Newtonmore. It also has an air of sadness, being the place where 3,000 Jacobites surrendered after the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Before leaving they destroyed the barracks and are the ruins you see today. Although a ruin, you can enter one of the two Barracks which would have housed around sixty soldiers and officers. In the video you can also see the remains of the guardroom, bakehouse & brewhouse and stables. It's an interesting place and well worth it for the views alone.
