I am Korean. The only unique Korean technology in Korean railways is the gauge and voltage, but the rest is heavily influenced and developed by Japan.

The old Saemaul were essentially 'first class' compared to the 'second class' Mugunghwa. They had super comfy seats with very deep cushions that were far comfier than the current KTX. They were also faster (time, not speed) as they stopped at fewer stops before KTX were introduced. The fastest Saemauls only stopped at two stations between Seoul and Busan, and took 4hr 10 mins.

As much as I like ITX-Saemaeul, I miss the old Saemaeul a lot. It had some of the greatest seats I've experienced so far-almost full-flat seats with thick padding and legrests even in normal class. And, it used to be carried by its own push-and-pull locomotive sets (the ones you included in the video), which are still my favorite train rolling stock to this day. ITX is clean, well-designed, and comfy enough, but it really couldn't achieve the same level of comfort and luxury that the old Saemaeul had. (tbf it doesn't have to, as the title of the fastest express train in the nation has been transferred to KTX)

It's a pity that Korail does not wish to invest more on regional trains (as people standing on the aisles or using benches need them), even though they've done a great job on commuter rail system. Envy from Formosa.

I just wish Korea would expand its railway system. There are some areas, especially in the south and the north east, that don't have a rail connection yet. The intercity buses are okay, but not as comfortable as a train.

TBH the current system was a legacy system by the Japanese (even the DPRK system was part of that legacy as much Korean War also affected the operations)

The old Mugunhhwa trains were not my favorite. My first day as a newly arrived Soldier was spent in an un-air-conditioned Mugunhwa train in August. But the old Saemaul train was great. Very comfortable and relatively quick.. Though not asfast as KTX. Regardless of what train you rode, Korail was always punctual.....unlike Deutsche Bahn.

Did you have any difficulty traveling within Korea if you not speak Korean? Do staff on trains speak english or did you have 0 interactions woith them so you can't know ? I assume automated announcements on Korean and English, or Korean only? As a tourist, it is difficult deicsion to choose high speed vs conventional. DOes high speed have better views because they avoid towns more, or do conventional lines give more of a visit of the country, despite the "industrual" entrance and exit of cities?
@RailloGo

Most stations, including major stations, automatically provide announcements in Korean and English. Most station staff speak English. Korea is a country where 70% of the land is mountainous. As a result, there are many tunnels installed on the KTX-only tracks, so there is no advantage in enjoying the scenery.

Until the first half of 2 years ago, when that video was filmed, Omicron spread was in full swing in Korea, where there were about tens of thousands of daily cases. And the yellow dust mask has been widely used since about 10 years ago on many days of winter and spring when air quality is rapidly poor due to eastern China, which is originally the main body of the wind direction

@@maxinlux6570 from what I know, the mask are often used for dust, as often the Mongolian dust and the smog from China often blew in into Korea. But in general it's also used for the cold, I believe...
