I too worked there for about 10 years. It wasn't the easiest place to navigate since it was comprised of multiple small modules that were connected at the corners. However this meant there were many interior 'courtyards' with lots of windows for the offices. I recognized some locations like the lobby, the lower area we called the fishbowl, the dining room, one of the entrances 'the T Door', and offices that looked exactly like mine. It's sad to see what I thought was a very cool building rotting away. In it's current state I doubt it will ever be refurbished. Thanks for the tour.

Oh wow, worked in this building (Q Mod) many years ago before our offices moved out to Hoffman Estates, IL (I think those offices will soon be abandoned). Recognized the main lobby, the cafeteria, and the various courtyards (where we would take our smoke breaks in). So crazy to see the building in this state of disrepair. Was also eerie seeing the email printout from Dave Lanni (was the head of Kmart HR).. Was a name I forgotten about but immediately recognized when the camera panned on that one printout. Oh the stuff you find on youtube!

I remember working there in 2005 to help import K-Mart data over to the Sears Holdings servers. I'd asked if I could take pictures of the building, and was told no. Too bad. Because even though much of it wasn't being used, the gardens and everything buildings were still being maintained. It was so weird walking through back then. I believe my exact phrase at the time was, "it felt like being surrounded by the shadows of something significant."

2002, I Worked this building for Pinkerton (Securitas). Stationed mainly at D entrance. Also turned keys at every pull station in the building, every day -- the round took almost three hours. The stairs to some of the mechanical rooms were some steep mo-fos (M and K mechanical) Around this time, I witnessed the first round of lay-offs. I liked the views from 3rd-level C-E link down into the courtyard. Would have hated the lower level due to lack of natural light. Transferred to their data center across the lot soon after. Finished school and got new just in time before the inevitable end of the contract Never thought I'd the inside of that building again! Thanks for the vid

It is so very sad to watch this video of the place I worked at for 28 years from 1974 to 2002, when myself and 900 other people were let go from the Kmart Corporation for cost-cutting reasons, after many, many years of bad corporate decisions by the company and its leaders. So very sad. Now it is just of "Tomb of the Unknown Workers".

My dad worked in vending and food service, and while the Kmart building wasn't on his normal route, he sometimes visited here if a fellow employee was out. Interesting video & well done. Sadly, this is a testament as to how inexpensive & valueless real estate is in SE Michigan compared to other major cities. This parcel sits in the heart of the Troy/Birmingham area, which Metro Detroiters consider "upscale & desirable". Fact is Troy real estate can't be that desirable or valuable if the current owner can afford to sit on it in ruins & undeveloped for 20 years and not lose money-- and no other party is interested in outbidding the current owner. In a vibrant city, real estate is scooped up so fast there's barely enough time to make a public announcement.

The Halloween decor belongs to Somerset. Somerset bought in in 08. I know the backstory on it from then on. You honestly shouldnt be in there, without mildew respirators! And out of the 100's of ppl that post videos in there.. not 1 of you have found the executive office. The reason only some of the windows are completely boarded up, is because the majority of the crew are scared of heights. The complete blocked of areas are me

@@DetroitEXP I worked for outside maintenance at Somerset for 18 years. My team was the ones that boarded up the windows. It's on the north side of the top floor. I was only in that area once. The city told Somerset, because it is a condemned building, our teams are no longer allowed inside that building. I saw it in 08 0r 09. That building has been heavily vandalized since then! For whatever reason, Somerset ownership had us open all roof doors and tower hatches. Water/snow just blows in and Somerset ownership turned off the power, but either didnt turn off the water or have the water lines blown out and 3 or 4 years after they bought it all the water pipes froze and blew and there was 4-5 feet of water in the basement. The building sold in 06. Somerset bought it in 08. The 2 years in between it was only scrappers going in there stealing copper/brass pipes. It wasnt until Somerset got it, that the urban explorers started goin. You really need $300+ mold respirators. Not paint 1's. Ppl get sick after being in there for 10mins. Troy swat used it for training exercises. If you find shot gun shells? Those are door breaching rounds. If you find 9mm rounds, with a paintball tip? Self explanatory. There are still paper shoot em up targets with good and bad guys. They did that for a few years. Live ammo was fired off in areas of that place. If you find ak blank rounds? That was from the Red Dawn filming. We found most of it. They didnt clean up anything when they were finished. Fyi if you do get caught in there? All that happens is you get banned from the mall for a year. No criminal trespass, or even vandalism charges. Your best chance to go there and have zero issues, is at night. Somerset security is scared of running into violent ppl. There is no power or cameras that can see you. 90% of the boarded up areas, are star bit screws. Get a set and a drill and you'll be in, in under 30 seconds QUIETLY!!! Have fun! I dont work there anymore, so I dont care. Just take the respirator thing, seriously!
