I so look forward to your videos, Alla. The walk was a beautiful escape from your exciting renovations. Thank you for sharing those fabulous views! The progress on the kitchen floor is exciting to watch and imagine soon you'll be able to not only enjoy a full functioning summer kitchen, but not too long from your indoor kitchen coming together, too. I'm from North America in the Pacific Northwest region of US. We don't traditionally see much terracotta tiles here. However older Southern California homes used terracotta bricks and tiles alot during early settlement of the Southwest territories ...especially influenced by the Spanish who had migrated from Central and South America bringing their traditional home building styles and materials of stucco and handmade clay bricks and tiles into their home designs. I'm nearing 80 years old and have lived primarily in Alaska, Washington & Oregon where stucco & terracotta tiles were not commonly used. In my mid 20's to 30 years old, my husband and I lived in Southern and then Central California where we did have Terracotta tile floors, but not with dark gray "glue" as you refer to the mortar you use. We would usually see beige, brown, or red sand used in making the mortar or glue as you call it. I thought of that as you were stressing and disappointed with the dark glue staining your red tiles and making them look muddy. I was just wondering if you have choices for other than black or gray sand to make your mortar? You are such an incredibly talented artist, gifted visionary, committed and disciplined worker for saving & restoring your historic home. I hope your tiles will not be permanently discolored by your dark "glue." Or that it causes you too much extra work scrubbing & scrubbing them back to their brighter terracotta beauty! Thank you for sharing your exciting journey on KZitem! Oh, and I love your adorable "Cheri" and the lovely "conversations" you share together! So cute!! ❤️

It was very generous of you to share all this lovely information and your story I learned so much by reading your comments. You have lived in some beautiful places. I’m sure Alla if she gets a chance to read this will probably turn to a red terra-cotta glue or mortar I do think it’s available and I would think it would be very beneficial for her as you suggested less frustration and hard-work and scrubbing. She doesn’t need extra work she has enough. Regards from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada 🍁

Alla where do you get the energy to do all that? It’s amazing. plus all the extra hard work you do . Where do you find the time and energy for preserving? I do admire your stamina. I shouldn’t be surprised because when I was your age I had a lot of stamina but not as much as you do. You are gifted. Those preserves look yummy. The terra-cotta tiles looking beautiful. The summer kitchen, it’s coming to completion . How wonderful it is to see these projects come about start to finish. You must be proud of yourself. I hope so.💝💐🌈

The way you describe a simple flower or how you stay so positive and how you keep your spirits up when long hours are part of the daily routine, that is truly special. Also, the Prosecco corner is a wonderful way to end a long day, cheers ❤

I always love it when you go for those walks up the hills. Yes would be hard living up there. Is there a road up there anywhere? You're making great progress now. Mmm I can smell you jars of apples, love the Christmas one. Don't worry about the summer kitchen with things everywhere. You'll get it sorted. I remember you asked us about where to place the table, maybe you could put it along the wall behind your swinging chair & put some castors (wheels with little brakes) on the legs so you could move the table out to where you want it. It would be good on the larger patio area when you entertain. I put the castors on a heavy table in my patio & its so much easier to move around.

Hi Alla. I think I spotted water cresson in the water party on your walk. Small little plants left side. I used to make ‘postage’ with it in La Gomera (Canary Islands) whenever I found it walking in the mountains. As the name suggest, just in the water. See left side of your screen small leaves in dense group.

I thought those type of tile needed to be sealed before you grout so grout doesn’t get into tile. Am I wrong? I love the inset pattern 😄
@ber9313

I thought so too. They are porous so the caulk soaks into it. If the tiles had been glazed the grout could go on it like a normal tile.

the tiling cement probably needs to be a little more watery to function properly in the giant caulking gun. Your jamming is just an indication that it was too thick

I’m not sure you care to hear this but another Brit who bought a castle they are popular. Pathericks. Michael installed these old tiles to keep in with the age of the cottage. Just like bathroom tiles he but in the grouts over the tiles and had a hard time getting the grout off. A friend brought a heavy duty floor cleaner that has like different brushes attached and after some hard scrubbing with this machine he got the grout off. Then they used different grade buffers to polish the tiles it looked great at the end but goodness it was a crazy amount of work. I don’t know Alla, maybe these tiles are very porous and it sucks up every thing. I’ve seen this happen again with another channel called Kylie Flavel an Italian farm house in Tuscany. Same deal. They did apply a sealer st the end to prevent the tiles from getting stained. If I were you Idd go at it slow like you were doing st first but I know that’s going to kill your back. But maybe it will save you that crazy amount of work at the end??? I really don’t know.
