The Lakeview Square Mall in Battle Creek, Michigan opened in 1983 with over half a million square feet of retail space. Originally anchored by Sears, Hudson's, and Marshall Field's, the mall now stands nearly empty, with only 30 stores remaining. Both J.C. Penney and Macy's, which replaced the Hudson's and Marshall Field's anchors, respectively, have since closed their stores. Without any department store anchors to draw shoppers, the Lakeview Square Mall has declined dramatically from its heyday in the 1980s.
