Humayunpur, located in the heart of South Delhi, has transformed into an urban village primarily inhabited by the Jat community. Additionally, it has become a hub for migrants from the North Eastern states seeking education or work opportunities.
This cultural mix has turned Humayunpur into a popular culinary destination in Delhi. Its narrow streets are lined with a variety of restaurants, cafes, and food stalls offering a range of cuisines including North Eastern, Korean, Nepalese, and Chinese. Today, let's explore a few of these culinary gems.
Our first stop is Lha Kitchen, founded by Dickey Bhutiya and her husband, known for its authentic Nepali dishes and cozy Nepali-style seating. The menu boasts traditional dishes like Thakali Thali and Jhol Momo. We had the chance to chat with Dickey Bhutia about their journey with LHA Kitchen.
Next, we visited a simple chana chaat stall run by Sameer from Arunachal Pradesh. Sameer runs the stall to support his education, offering a delicious chana chaat and chicken momos. His friendly demeanor adds to the experience.
Our third stop was Rajeev Tea Stall, a perfect spot for a break and a cup of tea along with parathas. During our visit, the strong ginger tea was a comforting treat during a sudden downpour. This newer addition complements their 15-year-old establishment.
Moving on to Lackteyyy’s Kimbap Simbap, a charming kimbap stall managed by Milan from Nepal. Milan's expertise in making kimbap has made his stall a local favorite. Clean and particular about ingredients, his pork kimbap is a must-try.
Our final stop was a fritter stall run by a young Punjabi couple, offering a special Manipuri fritter called Maroi Nakkupi Bora made with spring onions. Locals love the crispy fritters made fresh to order, delivering a delightful crunch and zesty flavors.
This food tour provided a glimpse into the diverse culinary landscape of Humayunpur, showcasing its vibrant food scene and unique offerings.
