Join us as we set off on an exciting adventure to the Mira de Aire caves, located in the picturesque Aire and Candeeiros Mountains Natural Park. These caves are renowned for their impressive formations and vast chambers, making them a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
History and Discovery:
The Mira de Aire caves were discovered in 1947 by a group of local explorers, including Joaquim Martins Avelar, José Formosinho, Antonio Faustino, and Henrique Gomes de Sousa. These pioneers ventured into the unknown depths and unveiled a subterranean world of extraordinary beauty. The caves were later opened to the public in 1974, allowing visitors from around the globe to marvel at their wonders.
Entering the Caves: Our journey begins as we descend into the caves, following the same path that the original explorers took. We'll show you the rope representation that signifies how they navigated these depths with minimal equipment.
Navigating the Chambers: As we explore the various chambers, you'll see the intricate formations up close. From towering columns to delicate curtains, each structure tells a story of time and natural artistry.
The Underground Rain :) You'll witness water droplets falling from the ceiling this process contributes to the formation of new stalactites and stalagmites over centuries and it really annoyed our son :).
Fun:
During our visit, we faced a few challenges, such as the limited lighting within the caves. Our guide informed us that the lights would turn off after 20 minutes, adding a sense of urgency to our exploration. Lukas, our son, was particularly concerned about this and made sure we stayed on track. His excitement and occasional nervousness was quite funny to see.
After approximately one hour of exploration, we emerged from the caves using a lift. The Mira de Aire caves offer a unique glimpse into the Earth's geological past, and our experience here was nothing short of extraordinary. We hope this video inspires you to visit these magnificent caves and witness their wonders firsthand.
