What lurks at the end of deep dark tunnels inherently terrifies us. Our eyes aren’t designed to see through the thick black veil under the earth where the sun never reaches. Yet, at the same time, there is a fascination about what lies just beyond the threshold. That temptation to go where few dare to tread is an acquired taste but can be ever-so-sweet.
The Tyro mine, however, is a blend of the daring and the timid. This mine is very well travelled and can give you a glimpse into how the inner workings look without diving deep into the depths.
The most explored lower section was at least 200 feet or more underground at one point. Today a good portion has been exposed to sunlight as the top layers are gone, letting beginner explorers get their feet wet, so to speak.
Don’t let that lull you into a false sense of security, though. Mines can be hazardous, no matter how much or little they have been explored. False floors, unstable ladders, rotting wood, crumbling rocks, collapses, water, and even snakes (and in our case, spiders) can be waiting to grab you in the dark expanses.
