anything that controls the clock. not the air raid

Small schools usually have to have ALOT of two way players any offense that controls the clock in your favor even when plays are going bad is more favorable in my opinion. Use the clock as an extra defender. Small schools with a lot of two way guys must have good clock game. If you run hurry up go 3 or 6 plays and out but only burn 6 -10 off the game clock your players are in a bad situation. And 1000% offense must be enjoyable.

I agree with that. It's one of the reasons why I'm falling in love with the Sugar Huddle.

I would run a gun option offense. I would have triple option, speed option, buck sweep, belly, misdirection, down g, midline, and speed sweep. The pass plays would include snag, dagger, flood, stick, mesh, and smash. I would also have several sail concepts out of play action. People think kids nowadays only love to pass the ball but that’s not true. What kids want is the opportunity for them to make plays. When the ball is thrown it gives them hope that they might get it even if in reality most coaches know the play is designed for a certain player. In this kind of offense the ball is given to a ton of skill players and this means they’ll all be willing to block for each other. It also teaches patience and toughness because it is still a majority running offense. While you are meant to run the ball a lot if a team try’s to stuff the box the ability to spread the field and pass is very easy.

I will always recommend the Single Wing, because you don't need to have traditional QB. If you are blessed to have more than one of those players the single wing does have spread variations that open up the passing game. If you're an air-raid small school team, I still recommend that you have a single wing package as a security in case both QB'S go down with injuries. Plus it can throw a curve ball to your opponents who have to prepare to see it wether you break it out or not.

You don't need a traditional QB but you have to have a GREAT full back who knows the game. I do agree with the curve ball. Every offense needs that.

@@CoachMcKie you can also use Inside Zone and Wide/Outside zone for your run game and not have to pull linemen and make everything look the same. Add TKO blocking for The Power Off Tackle you keep everything simple. You can also play with tempo by using a sugar huddle and vary your snap count

Hey Coach! Question, I like how you say coach what you're comfortable with but you also say you have to adjust to your players. What if my personnel would be great for the air raid, but I know nothing about the air raid? Should OCs learn many different offenses to have in the back pocket?
@timjackson16

Big 20 personnel guy here. My go to would be a Spread with my base personnel and set being a Pistol with a Sniffer. Zone/Power RPOs, Outside Zone, Boot and Play Action.
@CoachMcKie

What if you don't have those type of players?
@timjackson16

@@CoachMcKie minor adjustments to the personnel depending. Yes sometimes it’ll be difficult to find a good sniffer back. If so I make it more one back with 2nd level Snag RPOs paired with one back power. If you can’t find three good receivers add a tight end.

Flexbone triple option. Absolutely the best choice for a small school...unless you are a small private school that can recruit from a large metro area. Then get that air raid train rolling lol

@@CoachMcKie For flexbone or for air raid? I've never coach an air raid system, but I can tell you from experience, you just need a QB who can read, a FB, and 1 good wing to run the triple well. QB doesn't even need to be fast, just make the right decision for ball distribution.
@CoachMcKie

As someone who is only recently removed from his high school days and who played in a flexbone system at a small school, I can say it certainly had its moments (we would regularly rush for 300+ and even 400+ yards a game, even in our losses), but I personally don’t feel like the flexbone is the greatest thing. The limiting factor is not the backfield-it’s the o-line. I played left guard, and we linemen had to be the fastest players on the field for a 5-yard window every play to get to the backers and give our ball carriers room. If that didn’t happen, the play was going nowhere. You have to have 5 good athletes up front to make it work, and I’d say that’s non-negotiable

@@CoachMcKie we are mirroring the high school now (7th grade) but the last season we had we mostly ran a variation of spread and air raid. In the end, it was all on me because I didn’t install it correctly and I thought I understood it and I clearly didn’t. I’ve worked with the HS OC over the summer and learned his system and how to install it and it’s been a great three weeks so far. Much better than last time out.
