What's weird about the Qunari in this game is the art style, they didn't look weird in any of the other games. The horns missing horn texture and looking like stretched skin that looks extremely dysmorphic is the issue here not to mention that giant highway of a forehead, not the lore.

I’m probably a little older than most of the people commenting and I think it’s easy to forget that we’ve never had this much access to a DA game before release before bc social media was NOT what it is now. Rage bait and echo chambers weren’t as prevalent and there was just less exposure in general when it came to previews. I still remember all of the DAI complaints and haters and hardcore naysayers, but I still loved it. It was still a smash hit. The art style may not be what I was expecting, but I’m excited. The foreheads are just too big and they hang too much over the eyes. You can see it especially on the female Qunari with the really long dark hair. Why they change the Qunari so drastically from DA:I and DA:2 is beyond me. I know that artistic reworks in game dev are nornal. The Qunari looked awesome in DA:2. They were distinct from humans. Which they should because they are not human. Ironbull looked fine. Why breaking what was already good? In all trailers so far I still search for the Motion-capturing. They said they did lots of it. For what scenes I ask? Is it like ME:A where everything motion capturing just went into the "spicy" scenes? In the dialogue scenes most head, chest and hand movement look mechanical so far and kinda stiff. I already spotted lots of reused animations from DA:I. Which is a 10 year old game. Rook does not really say anything interesting in any of the trailers so far. All responses are very neutral or questions and reminded me of ME:A. Very Rider-like and at this point I really ask myself if Rook will have an appealing and nuanced personality (or will they just a jerky smartass for the laughs?) and if Rook will be really that important for the story. Or that the companions will overshadow Rook. I listened to the Vows of Vengeance. The dialogue writing is oftentimes very on the nose like, In some Trailers as well. Something that reminds me of ME:A a lot and not in a good way. Did Bioware forget how important subtext is? Or do they think we need 50 shades of exposition dump to understand what is going on directly in front of our eyes? Do they think we are not capable to read between lines and come to our own conclusions through observations we make? Atm I am really sceptical about DA:VE. And the more I see the more worried I am. I love Dragon Age, I really do. I do not want to see myself burying another beloved franchise after the clusterf. ME:A was...

I just want to clear something up, DA as a series is in a high fantasy setting (it is on thedas and not earth). What did change however, and that is what you and everyone is noticing is the magic system. DA started off with a relatively hard magic system with rules set and stuff in the lore. Now, and this started to gradually change with DAI, it is becoming more and more of a soft magic system, e.g., neon lights that float mid air that have 0 explanation as to how that is possible and that did not exist before in previous games, warriors and rogues being able to do magic now, the entire basis and logic of magic changing from there being 4 distinct schools of magic where they're opposite of each other to the schools being changed in DA2 and later on some of them getting removed completely in DAI, etc.

The Fortnite take is just wild to me. This looks as much as fortnite as *every* animated thing looks like fortnite. Comparing two images - one Fortnite, one DAV - no one would mistakte one for the other, not even from 100 meters away. like. come on. Also, since when do we expect things to be 100% to our personal taste and preference? Completly ignoring, that many other people would like to differ? like?? I don't like how the player-Qunari looks, but other Qunari looked fine, so I would wait with speculations until the character creator is out. I also don't like the very purple UI. But these are not by any means gamebreaking things. Especially since DA was never a game to be played because of looks. In regards to all the magic-stuff and (maybe) changes - the events in DAI probably had lasting effects, I would assume and I'm really curious, how some of the changes are going to be explained (and I kinda doubt, that there won't be *any* explanations). Also, as Dorian told the player more than once - Tevinter is very different from Ferelden. I actually think it's very believable, that the magister would use magic in such a "modern" way. I can't be the only one, that can picture them using magic as we use technology - to make everything "easier" and for fun?

I thought you did a great job with practicing this different content approach, more off-the-cuff analysis. I prefer the deep dives but this is good, too ❤ On the Qunari: Take a look at the Qunari merchant in the Treviso section. Pause and look over their horns: they actually do have a much more distinctive texture where you can see where the horn breaks through the skin as it was growing. So that will be an option in the CC, just not one we’ve seen on a Rook yet. I do agree that they are trying to visually highlight the draconic features! I prefer the DA2 look, personally, but it is what it is, as you said. ❤

My first experience with Dragon Age was Inquisition and this was when I was a new gamer in a different place in my life and I know that colored the experience a lot for me; I know that this game is not going to make me feel the way that Inquisition did. But it's still Dragon Age and I think I am still going to have a good time with it even it is not perfect or everything I could have wanted.

I preordered the game the moment it was available to do so because I actually want to play it and make my own review. Just to clarify, yes I played all of the games, no I didn’t use the tactics settings of any of the games. I just didn’t like it the tactic settings. I think it’s a weak argument to bring up the visual effects of combat, when actually talking about combat. So what if a mage uses a neon green light stream of magic, the real question is does that stream do good damage. I’m a lore person, so I’m playing for the lore. That’s what gravitates me to the series. The problem with the Qunari rook we see is that it was customized to be “cute”. I will be playing as a Qunari warrior and I don’t plan on making a “cute” Qunari personally. Once i see what options they have since they claim to have different textures for the skin and horns, I’m guessing more monster like Qunari will be shown. I personally like the art style, it’s fits the time, as did Origin when it was released. Plus the engine for origins is obsolete and had major limitations, they had to work with what they got. That’s why the colors were so dull and Qunari didn’t have horns. The colors give the environment in this game identity, showing how different each place is and how the events of the game effect it. Honestly the game looks like it’ll be a 6.5-7 out of 10 realistically speaking from has been shown. Most likely my opinion will change once I play and best it.

People are criticising the fact that you *can* pet animals? Really? If you were forced to, that would be worthy of criticism, but that you can? Just walk past the animal if you don't want to interact with it. That goes for anything that's optional, actually. If you don't wanna do it, don't do it!

I try to stay away from content creators who are overly negative on the game. I find many of them "hate everything" because being a contrarian gets views. That said, I worry about the look of this game, especially in comparison to other titles released this year like Black Myth: Wukong (that game is stunning). Obviously that's a much smaller action game compared to DA:V, but as dragon age has moved toward more of an action-rpg model, I think it invites the comparison. Right now, it feels like DA:V is sitting somewhere between Black Myth: Wukong and Baldur's Gate in terms of style and mood. I hope the game found a sweet spot, but I worry it might end up looking like it's not sure what it wants to be. Right now, I'm cautiously optimistic and excited to play it on release.

And yet somehow, I get the feeling you give the ShillTubers from the 'Dragon Age Council' a pass, huh? Funny how that works, innit? Ive thought of the art style as being the American animation version of the realistic-anime-style that modern Final Fantasy games have adopted over the years. In the trailers, sometimes the art style is a little blurred for some reason that i hope is technical stuff that will be smoothed out by launch. But the cinematics are just shy of exactly the same realism as DAI. Its refined and more timeless, in that 15 years from now it will still look good compared to a style entirely based on realism. How it looks during gameplay? I dunno yet, Id like to see some things adjusted for launch. Imo Overwatch and Fortnite are more like Disney Pixar in style in comparison . 🤔

Believe it! has joined the conversation. And just to lay all my cards on the table: I loved Origins, liked DA2 a little, and liked Inquisition a lot. I will not buy Veilguard unless there is a Hero of Ferelden cameo, and I will not even play it for free if it is woke. If my preferences are met, then I plan to play as human male warrior weapon and shield tank since I've never played as that before and I think the new style of combat is meant for a protag who favors up-close action and endurance. I will either go Shadow Dragons or Mourn Watch depending on what background we can pick in addition to faction. For one reason or another, I want to roleplay as a Rook who if asked if the veil should come down or not would reply with, "flip a coin". So either a Rook who is disgusted with how the world is now, or a Rook who is fine with the world that is but would also accept a world without a veil (basically a Mourn Watch guard would be fine with death, in theory). But I do not have any plans for romance, since my Rook will be straight, and all the female romances look bad so far. Now on with the discussion. The qunari redesign is bad. It looks too fanciful and awkward. It should be gritty and tough. I always though the qunari faces looked best in Origins (basically Sten's face and some variations). The horns should be smaller than what is shown on DA2's Arishok, and even what is shown in DA:I. Also, I never liked how they were given pointy ears either. If they were going to do that, they should have given horned qunari pointed ears, and given hornless qunari rounded ears. I think the IGN presenter was terrible. Nothing that new or interesting was shown. For one thing, she picked the SAME dialogue options that the black male Rook chose in the first game demo. So we saw nothing new on that front. Also, I didn't hear any critiques, only defenses. It's clear that this IGN agent was paid and instructed to give a positive review, and even then didn't do a very good job. Also, she says the ten years MAY HAVE been worth the wait? Just more proof gaming journalism is non-existent. Say it is worth the wait or say it wasn't. What's with the vague language? I think the visual switch was done for the same reason as the combat style switch. BioWare doesn't have the talent to go more realistic, nor do they have the ability to build upon the Origins/Inquisition combat style. So instead of try and fail, they change it all around and start anew. That way any negatives or drawbacks can be blamed on the "new direction" or "bold experiment" of implementing a new design style or revamped combat system. The real reason is BioWare just couldn't hack it this time around. All they had to do was import Inquisition's graphics, update them, copy/paste the combat code, and then make improvements on it. That's it. Instead they spent years making a new system so as to make the combat the "most fun in the series". A waste of time, but again, done to mask their inability to improve upon the Origins/Inquisition style. What happens in the end is one of the major storylines gets blown for no reason. Rook stops the blighted evanuris, who are basically like Corypheus in Legacy. Mad and corrupted. Beyond being negotiated with or mined for information. If you thought Cory was a cartoon villain, get ready for Elgar and Ghil. At least Cory seemed in control of the taint. Basically, the evanuris should have been seven in number, and none of them should have been tainted. They all should have had their wits about them, and each should have been difficult to destroy in their own ways. And this is after Solas has been defeated or killed by the (ex-)Inquisitor and Rook. BioWare took the finale of the game and reduced it to an old rehashed plot we already played through in the previous game. Meanwhile, everything set up and teased at the end of Inquisition has been wiped out thanks to the time-skip. What we can do is nothing. As in... not buying it. If the game is bad, then BioWare should be punished with our indifference and withholding of money. That's the only way they'll learn. It's a fair point the critics make about the sloppy animations. If they can't get something basic correct, then it's likely the whole game is done incorrectly. The plank falling over after the kick, the lack of footprints in snow, the Venatori corpses with their arm sticking up in the air, etc. It all indicates a pattern of poor design. The problem with the forest, other than the auto-generated nature-scapes, is that most of this was already done in DA:I, and done better. The magical reconstruction of bridges and pathways was something any mage could do in DA:I, among other things, and the animations were better. Oh BioWare didn't do anything with the hair. That was all imported over from the FIFA people. So all these fans praising the hair styles and physics are directing their praise to the wrong people. If you want to see BioWare's abilities, or lack thereof, look at the motion mechanics on Rook's cloak or other pieces of hanging clothing. It looks stiff and jumpy. I think the limitations will be obvious throughout the whole game. It may even come to the point where people turn the combat down to easy just to blow past it quicker. No, that red veil tear looks related to the Fade memory we're supposed to be experiencing through Solas. Look at the text, it says "Betrayal of Felassan". This is probably when Solas killed him. I don't think any of those side messages will change the game at all. None of it will matter. Maybe a dialogue change, if that. Case in point, I heard if you don't take Lace with you to play dominoes with the statues, you automatically take Neve instead and SHE gets injured. So this is a no-win situation. Whoever you take gets hurt, and then she recovers, so... no consequences. Most fans aren't happy with the colorful high-fantasy nature of it. A brightly lit area is fine, but the graphics should be detailed. IGN tries to convince us the dark gritty part is in the cancer swamp, but that ain't it either. It's just dimly lit and full of random bright growths. Petting the cats and dogs is an okay feature to have, but it's not something worth showing off in a presentation video. Where did this "journalist" go to school? If it can't at least match the feature of petting your own dog where you want, then it's not up to par with Origins. We can't play Rock, Paper. Scissors with Manfred. We can only play Press A with Manfred. So the one time that having three ability/spell slots would actually make sense, and BioWare blows it. They give us ZERO slots to play RPS, and instead it's just push a button to make Rock, Paper. Scissors happen. How did BioWare botch this so horribly? Nah. Day 1 patch will shore up the facial animations. In cutscenes at least. If they wanted to ease new players in, they should have not mentioned Solas at all until much later in the game. Let Rook explore the world before getting roped into that mess. Solas could have just been saying "we" as in both he and Elgar'nan are just elves, not gods. So elves are not gods. Yeah, "felt like Hawke" isn't a good statement. So far all we know is Varric found us in a bar. That's it. And no matter what we pick, we are always a faction that is represented by a party companion. So we're just doubling up for one other party member. Again, "This could be the hit BioWare needs" is vague wording. Funny how the IGN marketer doesn't want to go on record supporting this game full stop. Almost like it is likely to flop? The game looks bad in many ways.

Yeah, Frostbite is notoriously difficult. Modders don't like working with it much either. However, the art style in Inquisition wasn't all over the place. It was cohesive. But, like you said, in Veilguard, it's different styles. This is bc the bones and muscle of this thing is still an MMO. They merely slapped a single-player skin sort of reminiscent of an RPG on it. The scenery and environment are completely drowned out by the MMO neon sparkles fireworks, and the characters don't match that style either. The fact that it was supposed to be an MMO, until February 2021, is probably the reason for the redesign of Qunari and elves as well. It's also the reason you cannot control your party members and why there are only two of them. They were supposed to be the people you'd play the game with.

@@ImpGoose I'd go with no time/money. They would've had to start from scratch, basically. Considering how long games this size take to develop these days, it would've taken them at least 2 more years to do that (if we go by BG3, which took somewhere around 5-6 yrs). Sadly, EA never understood what they had with BioWare or Dragon Age. I used to joke that someone at EA must hate this IP, or else they wouldn't keep switching things up with each release. Now I think that they simply couldn't recognize its greatness. I mean, forcing a studio to work with an engine that's normally not used for these types of games is already a piss-poor decision. It's a wonder they even managed to pull off what they did with Inquisition. Also, I figured out why the movements are so weird, I think. Apparently, the devs took the hair tech from the EA Sports/FIFA team. What if they took more than just that? Look at any of the FIFA gameplays. The characters move the exact same way. On a football field (soccer, for the Americans), it looks fine. For an RPG however...

I'm going to speak up as someone who is fully excited about this game. I think it looks good! The art style isn't perfect but I do like it and I don't see anything fundamentally wrong with it. I do agree that the qunari aren't as good as they could be, but I just think theyre imperfect, not bad. Personally I think what's missing is a bit more visible difference between horn and skin. Otherwise I'm on board. Regardless, i intend to preorder it and unless the game is downright unplayable, I can't imagine regretting that or not loving it. People are entitled to their opinions and if people don't like what they've seen, thats fine. But I think something that really does bother me is how people are claiming that the game has been "dumbed down" or had "the edges sanded off." And I think it's because there feels like a veiled elitism to it. Like people saying new audiences are dumb or immature, so anything done to appeal to them must have made the game worse. Like all the people saying the art style is cartoony. It's different, but honestly to me it mostly looks like Inquisition with some minor tweaks and has been overall improved. And I think comparing the style to fortnite is just incorrect. I've actually looked at fortnite and that style is so much different and more simple. Saying this game looks like that is high praise to Fortnite. Similarly, people complain that the combat has been dumbed down, and I think that's wrong too. You can dislike the new combat, you can think it's not right for DA, but I don’t think you can judge it as dumbed down before you play it. The gameplay is now an entirely different style that will require different skills. Maybe this will be a bad version of action gameplay, but that remains to be seen. I'm pretty decent at crpg combat, but I suck at action combat for the most part, so it's not inherently easier or requires less thinking. So comparing the old and new styles by that metric is apples and oranges. It feels like that opinion comes from a place of "action games are popular, so they must be dumb and easy." It isn't even about being biased, there's nothing wrong about being biased if you're honest about it. I'm very biased in favor of this game. But I also recognize that there's probably valid issues with the game that either I don't care about or feel positive towards. That's why I like your channel. You have some issues I just disagree with, but you discuss everything on its own merits. And even for things I personally just don't care about like physics, I recognise that those are genuine flaws that can be improved. But it never feels like you're condescending or exaggerating an issue.

Its not just the qunari but look at Davrin he looks like a human with pointy ears. We know that elves were also supposed to be a distinctive race. It seems like they were more interested in DEI then in making the characters fit their own lore. There aren't any black elves(based on jewish and native Americans) in the lore and more importantly none with Davrins build. I'm perplexed they did this because they could have easily made Davrin a human and all they would have to change is the ears and valleslin. It makes more sense since a Dalish elf according to lore is so unlikely to become a warden compared with humans. Either that or they adjust Davrins physical appearance to look more like an elf instead of a human with pointy ears.😊

I'm not a fan of the art style, but if the story is great (and I'm sure it will have jaw dropping twists), it's a good game for all lore lovers

My biggest gripe is how it went from dark fantasy to Disney, gone are the blood, gore and terrifying darkspawn. Also don't like that all characters are pan sexual meaning you can romance anyone as any sex, it takes away a bit of replayability of making a new character to romance a another character. Also while Inquisition great still had some great written characters even if some of them were gay, Dorian has a fallout with his family because he is gay, Solas being a really ancient elf and the dread wolf himself, his romance is race and sex locked and while bull swings both ways I feel he is the best written character.

The thing about the reiterations of the Qunari designs...I wasn't even that happy with Iron Bull in Inquisition. He already felt like a softened version of the interesting (and IMO peak) design in DA2. But the design of the Qunari in Veilguard makes Iron Bull look like Arishok's intimidating older brother.

I feel so excited! I really love the more "cartoony" texture (I really think that it is definetly 100% better than DAI) also the fact that we can hide the ui is amazing, regarding the very colorful ambient I guess that on the settings there will be a chance to decide the saturation and the blur effect. But for now I really can't wait to jump into this new adventure and romance the hell out of Davrin and Lucanis ahahah

Thank you for posting this video! I wonder if some of the issues, like the lip syncing, can be patched away? For better or worse, Day One patches are really common. I have a feeling that while there are a lot of people who saw the videos we did and went ‘oh, hell no!’, I’m wondering how many people are waiting on opinions from everyday joes. I’m not too concerned about low preorder numbers, personally. 1) It’s EA. They’ve more than earned their share of scorn from us fans. What better way to snipe them then not give them a confirmed sale? 2) Preordering seems to be going out of vogue lately. People downloading their games is more common than ever, so I’m wondering how good of a metric this is to base fan interest anymore. Either way, Thursday is going to be interesting!

My pleasure 🤟🏼🔥 Yeah, it's understandable that people don't preorder straight away. Dragon Age is my heart and ignoring it feels like a crime. It's irrational but I bought the deluxe edition 🤣 Pre-order is a token of faith. And faith has nothing in common with material manifestation. I guess what we are witnessing in the community now is a confrontation between consumerism in entertainment and unconditional love for characters that we care about so much. Both of these states are true and real. We are simply choosing the reality that fits our mindset best 😜

I don't have time to watch the whole video right now, but it was pointed out combat bugs exist. Weapons disappearing when attacking in the Minrathous opener video, same people are asking how mages are supposed to survive on higher difficulties when the companions deal such low damage and don't draw aggro well. A lot of your time is going to be spent kiting to gather up enemes into groups.

I had been watching your videos for some time now but for the long comment today, I'm sorry... I watched the whole video, there is so much copium...the truth is there are bad decisions made in this game period...we should not think of excuses when you know the decision made is bad...I will still play the game just because it is Dragon Age and I want to learn more of the story, but the direction made to create this game is not with the urgency and importance this game should provide to give Bioware the lifeline it needs... They have existing assets from inquisition which was made from the same engine, they can improve on the textures of those instead of going for a totally different artstyle...Qunari horns are not being hated on because of it not looking like a dragon's horn, it simply looks weird and ugly compared to all the other qunari horns (yes including inquisition)...the problem with physics is not about how you walk or run or carry a weapon, but rather how gravity works (everything falls like the same gravity as reality but some objects feels floaty - not even magic or whatever because it is a fantasy world)...they did not spend a lot of time on the hair physics as this came from a different EA game franchise built with frostbyte - they just implemented it - also, gamers do not buy games because of hair physics so if they really did spend a lot of time for the hair, they should have spent it in other aspects such as the artstyle? or maybe better combat mechanics? i agree that it is scary to think about the amount of dodges you need to do and traversing around the battlefield you need to do during combat - too bad you can not reposition your companions from any of those aoe effects you are trying to dodge... regarding the grittiness and dark fantasy vs high fantasy : DA had always been a dark fantasy world...dark meaning that we are talking about vile demonic darkspawns committing unthinkable evil and taking over the Thedas for origins, risking endangering the world from demons just to get the freedom of mages in DA2, less so in DAI regarding Corypheus which seemed to be a bit more generic where there is one great evil who wants to take over the world but the thought and the theme is still there with the design of enemies, environment and storytelling...DAI turned dragon age to a mix of both just to get more new players into the franchise, but veilguard seemed to feel more on the high fantasy and it looses the dark fantasy altogether with magic bursting everywhere, everyone has magic, everyone has a neon colored skill that will explode in your eyes and cause seizures...you can have magic, you can have awesome effects, but the direction used in the new game is too much on the bright flashy everything on your screen that you cant see anything anymore...dark and gritty is not putting black and gray on everything...its the tone of the artstyle, the story and concept of everything, not a single place - though i should say, hosberg does look pretty cool so lets discuss this...the environment is amazing...but this looks and feels not a dragon age game...if you remove anything that ties it to dragon age, no one will think and feel this is a dragon age game...i want to see myself wrong, that when this comes out, the story direction and the theme and feeling feels dragon age...but i dont think they did not create this with dragon age fans in mind

I understand people don't like the qunari style. But I dont get why that's a big deal. I always dislike loads of stuff about DA visuals (and combat for that matter) but I love the journeys in these games. As long as the visuals aren't too annoying (and actually they are in most ways pleasant) then I'm gonna love that game. I think it's weird gamers these days expect games to 100% suit their taste and get mad when devs make a decision that doesn't.

I sympathize with your reluctance to go all the way on sheer enthusiasm or doom & gloom, and I hope you'll manage to enjoy DA:V for what it is. Here is my personal assessment of DA:V so far: I think DA:V is facing a potential "death by a thousand cuts" situation. There are a lot of small elements that on their own are quite minor, but are nevertheless turning people off or at least lessening their potential enthusiasm for DA:V, and I'm not sure Bioware can afford that.

I agree, there are too many small things that annoy just enough to notice, yet when they are not together, it's hard to predict the game's experience. If every "cut" is bad, then my review in November will be violent 🤣

Absolutely agree... BUT... The people who adore a game built around hair and bloom and saturated colour ALSO need to respect those of us who are legitimately concerned about the REST of the game. There's an AWFUL lot of bullying, gaslighting and flaming from BOTH courts. My thoughts after watching hte IGN vid was pretty much the same as my opinion watching any of the "community panel" vids.... Paid in exposure. No game is 100% positive. None. Anyone gushing like this is either paid or running on hype from BioWare love bombing... or scared to say anything negative. Are there things I like and am curious about? Absolutely. Am I getting VERY turned off as we get closer to release purely because of the gaslighting and shill reviews? Also absolutely yes. I'm SO tired of the screams of "let people love it" but those SAME people are bullying anyone who has legitimate concerns or dislikes. It works BOTH ways. Toxic positivity is JUST as real as toxic negativity.

Hopefully players can fix the Qunari in the CC. And the only thing I don’t really like is the smoothness of the textures. And I hope that can be fixed by tweaking the settings. Other than that, the rest is subjective and I’m tired of the complaining over tiny things that don’t even matter. As long as the story is good, gameplay is fun, then I don’t care they allow people to swap genitals. Don’t care. It seems the anti woke crowd is becoming just as bad as the woke. Just tell a good story and make the game fun.

They completely butchered the qunari they don’t look scary or intimidating compared to previous games but it is what it is. Im planning on getting the game mainly for the story overall I think the game will probably end up being a 7 or 8 out of 10. Hopefully after this they decide to do a remaster or remake of origins.

@@Odder-Being Well they explain it by one of the tainted elf changing their look. I know, a cheap way so people don't blame them. Easier way to understand the change though is pretty much the different game engine. Origins was on the Eclipse Engine, DA 2 Lycium Engine and then forced to Frostbite for Inquisition and they kept it for Veilguard. So we will never get Darkspawn looking like they did in Origins.
