Erica was exactly the spark plug that Tom needed so badly. She's a literal goddess and looked amazing alongside Tom- real badass woman. Lois changed his character for the best. That's why Clark and Lois are such a power couple. I didn't even know anything about Superman and Lois and I knew when Lois showed up she was going to be endgame bc Tom's whole energy changed and he finally had the spark in his eyes like he finally met his match. Pretty epic stuff. I can see why Tom remembers so much with Erica. Great podcast!!! this was a lot of fun.

Best Lois Lane EVER and not just saying that as a fan-girl. objectively, she is a wonderful actress so she brought realism to a character who is regularly submitted to ridiculous storylines and Erica always plays her grounded so even the outlandish scenarios feel fresh. She is also the only Lois, in my 40 yr history w the character of Superman, who's (1) made it believable as to why Superman would fall in love w her (2) portrayal embodied the character and not a caricature and most importantly (3) relationship w Clark supported and even solidified his destiny. many more reasons but yeah she is the best Lois 👏👏👏❤️

@alyce831 they've said a few times that it's not Tom or Michael that reads or comments for them. I would assume it's Bryce, I wouldn't think they'd hire a separate person to edit and post to social platforms. but to your comment: Michael doesn't not like Lois. he doesn't know Lois. at this point in the show, Lex has had little screen time w Lois. other than "Lucy" I can't even remember him referring to Lois even as a 3rd party in the whole past season. So Michael, only knowing about characters who's scenes he's shared, wouldn't know much about Lois. I haven't seen any evidence on the podcast that he doesn't like/respect her. he's been far more vocal about Chloe, especially in the 1st 3 seasons when Chloe was obsessive, desperate, and often times betrayed Clark. are you sure you aren't thinking of Chloe instead? cuz I think Michael has needed Chloe's character-redemption-arc (heavily discussed by fans in S4 podcast after she learns Clark's secret) in order to bring him around to her. cuz of any cast member, she's the one character that Michael has double-facepalmed the most about so far lol

"I don't know we were doing something" you were putting on sunscreen on Lana LMAO but he remembers Erica's bikini and what she said. Also Tom and Erica maximizing the joint slay at all times. really sweet and refreshing for Michael to show such appreciation for Erica ❤ I'm sure he was speaking for the whole podcast. They don't talk as much about Erica, since Lois had to take a back seat to Lana at times for her 1st four seasons, so I'm sure the focus will be more on her once we get into S8-10, but it was great to hear it now❤ it sounds cliche now, since we've heard her described this way every time Lois is brought up, and rightly so, but honestly 1st words out of my mouth when Erica joined the cast was "breath of fresh air" and then to see her character grow, and her performance more rich and nuanced over the seasons, and how successful the Clark/Lois dynamic was. really the reason why I can objectively say Erica was THE BEST Lois Lane hands down. it was so fresh to see how their interactions evolved: mild annoyance to friendship, familiar level of comfort in being around each other, she crushes on Clark (not the hero, the man) FIRST and even w that love triangle she still wanted Clark over The Blur. the fact that they didn't do that tired obvious "love at 1st sight w the gorgeous man who just saved my life" was DELIGHTFUL. and even though we were getting really pretty anxious having to wait till almost the end of the show for them to get together 😫 the fact that they had such a deep and layered friendship made their love story so much more meaningful and satisfying. I really think that was all Erica - the writers had their intentions for Lois, but they were able to go in that direction and pull it off because of Erica. well done 👏👏👏

This episode is actually very pivotal because it kickstarts a 7-episode arc that will culminate in Reckoning and will have major repercussions for the Kents. Also, I am not sure when we started looking for moral lessons in every Smallville episode? Did Lucy or Ageless have a moral lesson, LOL? The Dukes callbacks were a lot of fun, even for someone like who's never watched the show. Wopat was really a terrific choice to bring in to the show and you can tell how much fun Schneider had with him. Tom Welling as well, who looked genuinely beaming when he was around the two of them. John Schneider has really been a non-factor for most of season 4 and the first 5 episodes of season 5. But he really comes to the forefront here and he shows everyone how badly underutilized he was!

It is one of my least favorite aspects of S5. 1) Johnathan's main priority is his farm. 2) Johnathan is heavily focused on and even paranoid over projecting his family's anonymity. He even ran out into a tornado to stop Nixon. Yet suddenly, he wants to be a politician neglecting the farm and putting his family in public spotlight risking Clark's secret. It is completely out of character and makes zero sense.
@Costas22
Ай бұрын
@@ryandeffley7652 I can cut them some slack with the storylines for a couple of reasons. The first being that they do address why he would run given how protective he's been of their privacy (I think next week). So it's not like he jumps right into it. Plus, Jonathan may have mellowed a bit in season 4, but he's still the same guy who can't stand the Luthors. And I can see him being so hotheaded that he would jeopardize the secret coming out just to stop Lex from gaining more power in Smallville (mind you, he feels guilty about helping them build the plant in Smallville to begin with). I also remember him encouraging Clark to run for class president in season 1 and Martha telling him that very same thing: Why would he be ok with Clark being in the spotlight. Obviously class president is more low profile, but Jonathan maybe is of the mindset that making a positive difference in politics is worth the risk. Personally, I have A LOT of issues with this storyline and what it leads to, but I wouldn't say Jonathan running in the first place is one of them.

I have to add my vote to those saying that the guys are missing the point with the strip tease scene and the episode in general. This one really wasn’t done purely for the male gaze - Clark *needs* something to jolt him out of his current mindset, i.e. that Lana is the Only Girl in the World. It was S5, and way past time to start seeding a little more of the future Lois/Clark relationship - not only on a romantic level, but on a professional one as well. This is one of Clark’s first steps into what will ultimately become his life after Smallville, and maybe the episode had some hokey moments, but it was pivotal. Edit: I adore Erica, she is always so thoughtful and funny and balanced about everything. I could watch her for hours. ❤

Then Lois lightweight giving Clark a lap dance and seeing how uncomfortable Clark was when Lois had her "you-know-whats" all up in his face was classic 🤣🤣🤣🤣... Seeing the Dukes of Hazzard reunite was awesome 👌🏾... I remembered watching this episode back when it first aired... Me and my Dad were watching it at the time and it was my Dad they told me about Dukes of Hazzard (as that show was back in his generation so that's how he knew John Schneider before Smallville)... Even though Lex and Clark's friendship is pretty fractured, it was cool seeing Lex still being that big brother to Clark and even helping out Jonathan by giving him the heads up about the Senator... So we still see that Lex is still a good dude despite us witnessing him moonwalk into his darker side... This is my favorite episode! I loved all the Duke references. I definitely would vote for Martha. Lex campaign slogan needs to be on a shirt. Erica was such a great Lois. I loved the helicopter scene. The place where the girl got hit by a car was the same place that Chole discovered Clark’s powers. This is one of my favorite episodes. I love the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy references. Y’all rock

Great podcast guys!! So glad to see Erica on again and to hear her take on the striptease scene!! Please have her on again soon. I think Michael and Ryan missed the boat on this episode. It is important for many reasons. First because the Lois and Clark relationship is developed very well on the show and even though they are frenemies at this point there is an obvious attraction. Their final shot on the roof is amazingly well framed!! These are two gorgeous young people who even look like they belong together. Erica does many good things in this episode. Her eyeroll at Clark's awkwardness at giving her the twenty is priceless!! Tom and Erica just play off each other so well. Tom's aye aye sailor at the end was a great moment and a rare time when Lois is at a loss for words. The Dukes of Hazzard reunion was fabulous!! I kind of wonder if this was kind of a goodbye present for John as they knew he would soon be leaving the show!! I busted my gut at the car jump scene!! The episode sets up Chloe working as a reporter, Lois and Clark showing some interest in solving cases kinda sorta like journalists and of course it sets the stage for Reckoning!! By the way a guy like Johnathan Kent once ean for office. I think his name was Abraham Lincoln.

Just shows how comfortable Tom and Erica were in S5, the writers gave them everything and they would do it amazingly well like they had known each other for a lifetime. I remember Tom and Erica went topless for the love scenes with each other so they definitely knew how bring it for their characters. Anyways, it was nice seeing Tom Wopat and John hamming it up, I didn't mind all the Dukes references it was fun. Dukes was my show and always will be so it was nice to see the boys back together. I enjoyed this episode.

That's too bad they bait and switched Erica. Especially in retrospect, she's now my favorite Lois, after seeing her interviews and her 'real' persona, I recognize how great she portrayed Lois because like Tom and Rosey, SO DIFFERENT from her normal personality. I would have loved it if her stripper scene was more funny and showed her character. I mean, yeah I'm a guy, I appreciate women's beauty and all- but I'm also a fan and filmmaker first and I hate that exploitative feeling when characters completely change for a producer's post-production boner. Like the Aquaman scene- at least she's swimming- but this episode, it just takes the air out of her Tomboy socially-bizarre attitude. At least Lana was a temporary vampire, there's some motivation.

I dont get why so much complain about some sexy stuff on the show. I mean its for teenagers and its not that intense. Some hot scenes are not bad and are even more light that many things in shows now. And Erica did and amazing job, idk why some of you guys act so weird about it, its not that big of a deal lol. Erica is hot, i loved it back when i watched it as a teen

@@Insomniac1985 yeah i mean its was clearly such a teen show's way to show some skin, it was very light. But as a teen it was awesome for me. But sometimes Michael gets so weird about stuff like this 😆 to each their own i guess, but i loved Erica in this one

Funny thing, when remembering this episode, I *NEVER* think, "oh, the one with the helicopter." No, it's "oh, the one with Lois dancing!" You can weight your favorite scenes however you want, but some things you remember more than others.

Expressing a similar sentiment to some comments already, I think Michael and Ryan are looking back at this episode with a rather narrow lens. Yes, the show is maturing and evolving. Yes, Smallville does dive into the darker and more adult storylines. The episode was done tastefully, Erica crushed it and clearly embraced the experience at the time of filming. Let's stop looking back on episodes like this one with a sense that "we know better now" or "that wouldn't fly these days".

It’s like they forget the show doesn’t all take place with them in high school they do grow up so grown up stories happen.

I didnt like Michael's attitude most of the time about this episode. Sometimes I think he may just need to skip some of these and let the other guys do their thing. He was just acting annoyed more than anything. Tom at least can find something he enjoys about most things.

🌹🌹🌹Erica is such a delight! BEST Lois Lane for multiple reasons 👏👏👏 but also like just the best person! Wish she was a host! really appreciated her take on this ep. I mean she's (and Kristin too) in early/mid20s (working for a small network, a decade away from me-too movement) despite being cast members, they wouldn't have felt the freedom or have the autonomy to say no to those objectification scenes. She still did it so professionally and flawlessly, putting that awkwardness into the scene and making it work.

Ironically enough, a year later Erica would say no to the same thing Kristin refused to do in Thirst. Kiss another woman. In the episode called Combat. Al and Miles were reaching the breaking point with her as well.

@Costas22 you know as I was waiting for the podcast today I caught the little clip they recently dropped of Kristen's interview from last week, I don't think she was talking so much about not wanting to do the kiss as much as just objecting to the entire ridiculous ep. she also referenced the outfits a lot. I think it was more about how literally every single part of that ep, while still being 100% cringe, was really out of character for Lana. from the very first scene w her rushing packing after waiting til the last possible second to tell Clark (not to mention why is she enrolling 2 full months after the semester starts) to her wanting to major in Astronomy of all things when we've never seen her study or even discuss school in 4 yrs (at least in Paris she had an interest in French history) to her wanting to join a sorority (and the most elite one at that, not to mention how superficial the sisters are which can be seen a mile away from anyone who is way less self-aware as Lana is) like seriously no part of that ep made any sense. ironically, actually now that I'm thinking about it, the kiss actually would make sense in that context as the most efficient way to exchange blood (since most vampire lore you have to give AND receive it to transition) and in that scene the vamp cut her tongue. compared to like when Angel was sired: Darla drank from him then cut her chest then had him drink from her. um, at least Smallville attempted to save time ? 🤷♀️😅🤦♀️ Im trying to remember Combat, haven't seen it since last year on my 2nd binge for the podcast lol but I feel like any objection would have been more about why it would be necessary to the story (and not so much about kissing another new actor), which if it's the one I'm thinking about (Lois in the red leather, Clark in the cage match) yeah her kissing a random girl wouldn't have made sense for Lois. but actors don't care about kissing other actors as much as they care about gratuitous scenes and keeping the integrity of the character. Kristin, while still young, was established enough in the show to have a right to feel she shouldn't have to degrade herself in that situation between the sex-ed up behavior and awful outfits (more than a random inappropriate on-screen kiss not that im not saying it wasn't a factor in Kristin's objections) and hopefully we'll get the BTS when Combat's podcast comes up but I would guess same for Erica
