Exposure factors (kVp, mAs, Bucky, SID) and their relationship to the exposure measured at the image receptor are critical to achieving high quality x-ray imaging for all of your patients. We focus on each of these factors first in terms of overall importance and then in terms of the relationship to x-ray exposure.
This is the basis for our x-ray math for the Detector Exposure:
Exposure ~ kVp^5 (15% Rule)
Exposure ~ mA
Exposure ~ s
Exposure ~ 1/B
Exposure ~ 1/SID^2
We then solve for the effect of these factors on the time of an x-ray exposure as that is the most frequent way that the exposure is updated on an x-ray system.
Finally we look at some sample problems where we change one exposure factor at a time, maintain the exposure on the image receptor.
