John Wayne was actually ten years older than Colonel Vandervoort when D-Day arrived. In the film he was twenty-eight years older. So it seems incongruous that the soldier played by Red Buttoms would refer to him as "old man".

My veteran Dad always commented about the poor detail sent to cut the bodies down-probably under sniper fire. The bodies aren't bothering anyone except the colonel's feelings so what's the point of endangering already limited fighting men for a useless detail?

Out of respect for their fallen, and mental health of the soldiers. Doesn’t do young men’s minds much good trying to fight a war while their homies dangle lifeless above them by their parachutes lmao. They’re not in contact with the enemy currently. Americans for a long time now have always recovered their dead.
