On April 5th, 2024, Sydney, Australia, (our first days of vacation) experienced an extraordinary deluge that shattered rainfall records. The city was drenched by a staggering 160 millimeters of rain since 9 am on Thursday, marking the heaviest rainfall in four years12. The Mid North Coast was also severely affected, with Port Macquarie receiving over 132 millimeters and Taree getting 125 millimeters of rainfall during the same period.
The New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES) has been tirelessly responding to over 1,000 calls for help across Sydney, the Illawarra, and the South Coast. Their efforts have included numerous flood rescues and ensuring the safety of residents in affected areas.
In Leets Vale, residents were directed to evacuate before 5 pm due to rising hazardous moderate flooding along River Road from Douglas Creek. Similarly, parts of Sackville North were urged to evacuate, and an evacuation center was set up at Richmond Club in Richmond.
The SES Northern Zone received more than 1,000 requests for assistance since 9 am on Thursday, with rainfall totals exceeding 100 to 150 millimeters within a 24-hour period. Chief Superintendent Andrew Cribb emphasized the importance of safety and staying informed through local news, weather reports, and social media.
Let’s hope for clearer skies ahead, and may the rainbows that follow be as vibrant as the downpour that preceded them!
